The SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak – The Impacts on the Anime Industry and Everyone’s Lives

March 22, 2020 by Chikorita157 6 Comments
While Eripiyo doesn’t have Coronavirus, but the flu, this scene is relatable to this situation.

As expected, it seems that the Novel Coronavirus has started to affect everyone’s lives. For an anime fan, it definitely had an impact. Not only anime productions are getting delayed, but also events and even anime conventions. Even the Tokyo Olympics that is happening later this year is in jeopardy and will most likely see a delay.

Not only that, various anime productions faced delays as a result. Some are very noticeable with Koisuru Asteroid, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T, A3, and others. It doesn’t end there. Some spring anime, most notably Re Zero Second Season along with a bunch of films pushed back until the summer. Moreover, Amazon is prioritizing shipping of certain goods to deal with the virus. This causes things like anime DVD/Blu-rays, merchandise, video games, etc to face shipping delays. With that, we are living with a new reality and life as we know it is changed forever.

You might be wondering, what is the Novel Coronavirus (aka Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2/SARS-CoV-2/nCov-19/Covid-19) and what affect it is happening on the anime industry. Most of you should have heard about this virus on the news and social media. As expected, it’s having a huge effect on people’s everyday lives. I will share some of my thoughts on how this situation is affecting me personally.

The Mysterious Blogger Award – Part I

February 26, 2020 by Chikorita157 Leave a Comment

It has been a while since I have done one of those blog award posts. As you have might know already, I have been busy relocating to the Washington DC metro area. Yes, it’s for a new job that I have been working at for almost 4 weeks.

Since I have been doing lots of driving back and forth moving stuff, finding a new place and such towards the end of last year, I didn’t get the chance to do it. It’s not until the end of January that I finally moved into a new place. The only problem, I didn’t have stable internet since I didn’t have stable internet. In other words, I couldn’t publish any other content besides episodic reviews, until now.

While I was busy moving, two people appeared to have nominated me for the Mystery Blogger Award. They are SparkNorkx of Supaku Blog and Keni from The Anime Basement. Apparently, the latter person appeared to have lost their post, so if you want me to do it, contact me as soon as possible.

If you are wondering, here is some background on what is this award.

“Mystery Blogger Award” is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.
– Okoto Enigma

Since I am very busy, I will not be nominating anyone from this award, but I will just do it.

Behind the Scenes – The Tools I Use to Blog About Anime

October 2, 2019 by Chikorita157 3 Comments
Artist: 世音

Since my blog hit the 10-year mark in February, I never wrote a post sharing behind the scenes. Yes, this includes the tools I use to create content. I think it’s probably a good idea to share the tools of the trade for those who want to get into anime blogging or interested in technology as I will cover some of the software and hardware I usually use on a daily basis.

Updated: Added some prices of the plugins/themes I use and added some more tools.

More Thoughts on Manga: Physical vs Digital and the Problem of Manga Piracy

April 4, 2019 by Chikorita157 4 Comments
Artist: 千歳坂すず

It has been a year since I started reading manga of series I enjoyed. This mostly consists of Manga Time Kirara series in Japanese. To me, it’s a good way to practice my Japanese language skills without the time commitment compared to other mediums such as video games.

Of course, there is more I want to touch upon the manga reading experience besides what I covered already. It includes the debate over buying physical or digital formats and of course the whole piracy debate with manga.

iPad and Anime Blogging Revisited – The Ideal Tablet for Japanese Gacha games?

If you have read my editorial on the popularity of BanG Dream and the changes in the Japanese video game market, Gacha games are wildly popular. While I have some mixed feelings with mobile gaming in the past, smartphones and tablets have changed substantially. They are now powerful to give good enough experiences.

It’s surprising how fast time flies since Pokémon officially turns 20 years old later this month with the first generation games (Red and Green) releasing back in February 27th, 1996 in Japan. While I have reflected on the franchise (mostly on the games) in the past, it’s time to share my overall thoughts on how Pokémon made me become an anime fan that I am today.

You might have heard from social networking sites and news sites that the President and CEO of Nintendo, Iwata Satoru has passed away this Sunday from cancer. It’s saddening for the fact that he contributed a lot to gaming and managed to turn Nintendo around by innovating the consoles, which have enjoyed a lot of success, namely the Nintendo Wii, DS and the 3DS.

With that, I will share my thoughts on his accomplishments and contributions to Nintendo and the gaming industry. Of course, I will also share my experiences with Nintendo and how I got into video games.

Life Lessons – Relating with Shizuka’s Difficulties – Should you Chase a Passion?

Since its airing, Shirobako gave a good glimpse of the Anime Industry on how it works and the issues surrounding it with some that are interesting to discuss about. Now, I am going to take a look at the last aspect, should you chase your passion or pursue a career that pays well?

Sure, the other four girls (Aoi, Ema, Misa and Midori) had an easier time getting their foot in their door, but there is one girl who had an extremely difficult time and her name is Sakaki Shizuka. The difficulties she faced comes at no surprise considering that the voice acting industry is very competitive and there are only so many roles to go around at a given time. Was it worth it at the end to pursue such a career? Could she have done things differently?

It has been several years since I last played an instrument after graduating high school. For me, music played a big role in my childhood because I learned how to the piano at a young age and played the Clarinet since 4th grade. While there are shows like Tari Tari and K-ON, which focuses on music that I can relate to, I have to admit that Hibike! Euphonium feels very nostalgic since concert band was one of my favorite aspects of grade school, which I will share.

Japanese Language and Kanji – How Exactly do you Learn Them?

March 3, 2015 by Chikorita157 3 Comments

Throughout my 3 years of teaching myself Japanese, I have learned quite a lot. To me, the grammar and vocabulary was not the difficult part since I am used to the subject-object-word sentence structure from studying Latin in High School. So far, I can understand most of what they are saying providing that I have a Japanese-English dictionary by my side.

For most people, the Kanji or rather Chinese Characters tends to be the hardest part of the Japanese language since it uses logographic characters (in addition to Kana) opposed to the traditional roman characters. People might be asking: why do we need it when we have ひらがな and カタカナ? I will answer that question along with sharing strategies I currently use to understand them.

It has been nearly three years since I began teaching myself Japanese. Sure, it’s not an easy process as it took a good amount of effort, practice to start understanding. So far, I can understand a good amount with a dictionary.

Just the last past week, a post by 10bit has caught my attention as he thinks that learning Japanese is a lot easier than everyone thinks. However, I have mixed feelings about his post not because he didn’t really list any starting points, but for the fact that not everyone will have the same experience.

Bullying and Generalizing People for Liking Anime and/or Video Games

In the past few weeks, I have witnessed a lot of bullying and name-calling shaming people who play or enjoy video games. It’s true that people tend to judge people depending on tastes and their hobbies such as people who like Anime since it’s a niche medium. Because of this, people who are not familiar with it will likely hold an ignorant, distorted or uninformed view on it and generalize them to a certain stereotype or label.
