Gakkou Gurashi! – Episode 1-3 – School Girls Meets Zombie Apocalypse

September 2, 2020 by Chikorita157 2 Comments
It may look like a normal day of school, but it’s not.

Now that summer is coming to an end, it’s time to cover one more show in the backlog. Of course, this show is fitting given current events. Yes, we are finally watching Gakkou Gurashi, a story about cute girls surviving a zombie apocalypse.

Yuki, the main girl of this zombie survival story.
The rest of the School Life club members.

As expected, the first episode started off lighthearted as Yuki wakes up from a sleeping bag. After having breakfast, she lives out a normal day of school. She also doses off during class. Also, she is part of the School Life club, which consists of Kurumi, Yuuri, and Miki. Sakura Megumi is their club advisor.

Yes, the dog can wreak havoc when you don’t walk it.

Later, she finds out from Miki that their puppy, Taroumaru escaped their grasp. It appears that it doesn’t like Miki’s presence.  Yuki plays sick to try to catch the dog. It’s obvious that some things are not normal, especially with desks piled up to work as a barricade in a hallway. Also, Kurumi has a shovel right next to her. A normal student wouldn’t need a shovel indoors, right?

It’s obvious that Yuki is not living in reality.

After running around the school going into various classrooms and up to the roof, they managed to catch him. Thankfully, they put them on a leash. Thankfully, Yuki apologizes for not walking the dog. But things get stranger when Yuki goes back to the classroom to get her bag. Miki sees Yuki pretending to talk to her classmates when nobody is there in the destroyed classroom. It’s obvious that Yuki is in her own world not realizing what is happening around her.

As you expected, this is a schoolgirl slice of life story set in a zombie apocalypse. Yes, it’s kind of the same sort of reality we are facing with Covid19, but more dire and scary. As expected, things get really scary, especially after the first episode. After all, the story created by a Nitroplus author, Kaihou Norimitsu. Yes, the same Nitroplus that consists of Urobuchi Gen who is the creator behind Madoka Magica.

Yuki almost had a close encounter with a zombie.

Either way, this is very surprising since Yuki pretends that everything is fine not realizing what is lurking. This becomes apparent when Yuki with her friends goes outside their safe area to gather supplies. Yuki wonders off in the library as the others look for textbook. A zombie came by. Thankfully, Megumi was there to protect her as the other girls distract the zombie before Kurumi defeats it with a shovel. Of course, Yuki thought that this is a “test of courage” all along and the zombie is the monster.

Megumi seeing the horrifying news.

Of course, we learn how the zombie apocalypse began. Also, it seems that Kurumi becomes traumatized by her crush turning into a zombie and attacking her. Yes, she had to use a shovel to defend herself. While some don’t care about her crush, it definitely left a lot of post-traumatic stress on Kurumi. Besides reliving that moment in her dreams, she always has a shovel next to her.

It looks like Kurumi is not the only one that is suffering.

The scariest moment is of course what Megumi went to. While she prepared to first day of school, her mother becomes worried. Yes, it’s about those strange car crashes before the zombie attack. Before we know it, the school quickly become overrun by zombies. Therefore, Megumi, Kurumi, Yuuri, and Yuki had to fend for themselves. My guess that they eventually found Miki, who is the last survivor.

Despite the zombie apocalypse, they have fun camping.

Either way, there are some lighthearted moments. Besides the moments with Yuki and Megumi, they also had fun camping. I have to admit the moments of seeing Yuki and her friends camping indoors is fun. Yes, Megumi checked on them to see if they are sleeping. Nevertheless, the rest of the episodes should be interesting.
