Ongaku Shoujo – Episode 3 – Hiyo and the Meaning of Music

July 22, 2018 by Chikorita157 2 Comments
Hiyo encloses herself from the outside in the world of music.

It seems that Hanako wants to become friends with Hiyo, but she is having a difficult. Meanwhile, Eri has difficulty coming up with a song for the whole group.

After watching three episodes of Ongaku Shoujo, I realized that Hanako takes more of the producer role seen in most idol anime than Ikenashi does. It appears that Ikenashi does most of the things behind the scenes rather than supporting the girls. It’s not surprising at all since Hanako is more into the idol thing than he us. Given that she is the almost the same age as the girls, this makes it easy to interact with them. Now we can put to rest the whole male producer ruins everything complaint.

Either way, the focus is on Hiyo, which is a shy, but smart girl when it comes to music. Her appearance kind of looks like a twin-tailed Chino. I compare her to Chino since she has a similar appearance and personality. She believes that everything is noise. She blocks everything with her headphones and listen to music. This makes it hard for people to become friends with her, even her fellow members. From this, it’s understandable why Hanako wants to be friends since she can relate to Hiyo’s passion towards music as she does with idols.

Eri playing her own unit’s songs on a guitar.
Thankfully, Hanako stopped a potential argument between Hiyo and Uori.
Haru and Sarasa spends time with their old friend, Eri over some cake.

I have to admit that it’s nice to see Eri singing and playing guitar in a recording studio. This is not surprising since she is one of the original members along with Haru. While she composes music for the group, she still has difficulty since something is missing when Hiyo mentions it.

Hanako gives it another try with Hiyo.
Hiyo is finally convinced that Ongaku Shoujo’s music is good.

I can understand why Hiyo feels this way. Given that the Ongaku Shoujo’s songs didn’t sell well in the past, she feels that nobody will pay attention to them. She thinks it’s because the listeners perceive their music as mediocre.  It’s understandable why she feels this way since the group as a whole put a lot of effort, yet they don’t have many fans.

Eri heard the whole thing all along.

However, this doesn’t mean that all music is meaningless since there are still good music. One simply needs to discover it. Thankfully, Hanako tries to convince her otherwise. She does this by saying that Ongaku Shoujo’s music makes her feel sparkly, happy and giddy. In other words, Hanako is telling Hiyo that not all music is mediocre. In a way, she is suggesting that Ongaku Shoujo should aim for perfection.

Eri and Hiyo starts singing together.

When Hiyo realizes the songs are created by Eri and how Hanako praises her songs, she says that she likes her songs too. This makes Eri happy as she comes out of the playground. After Hanako tells Hiyo that the world is overflowing with music, Hiyo took off her headphones to find out herself. Eri and Hiyo started to sing. From this, Eri manages to finish the song. During the recording session, the girls points out that Hiyo used her real singing voice, which causes her to blush. She thanks Hanako afterwards.

While Hiyo changed, there are some things that didn’t.

To me, I am happy that Hiyo finally realizes that not everything is noise and that there is still good music out there. Sure, music these days are questionable in quality, but it doesn’t mean good music doesn’t exist. Hiyo finally realizes that there is still great music that endears listeners and not everything is noise. Still, I am happy that Hiyo is finally become more open. Without Hanako, Hiyo wouldn’t be able to do it.

Interesting child genius episode. Hiyo’s dilemma made sense. Being a genius with no one to understand you made it difficult to openly communicate with other people. Luckily Hanako and Eri were there to help open her ears.

It’s not so surprising to see Hiyo considering mostly everything as noise. It was nice to see Eri and Hanko show her to the light. Still, Hanako really needs to work on her singing.
