It has been five years since Key and PA Works worked on a production. I have to admit that I enjoyed the first episode quite a lot.
Five years ago, Angel Beats left me with mixed feelings because the story was inconsistent and felt incomplete. Because of this, I have somewhat lower expectations for Charlotte, which is why I find the first episode very enjoyable.
Apparently, Otosaka Yuu can take control of people for a short period of time, an ability that can be very useful. Considering how narcissistic he is since he can use this ability at his disposal, he basically abused this ability in order to cheat his way into a highly ranked high school. He also used it to try to impress a girl, cheat on exams, look up skirts without consequence and of course cause bullies to get into fights with each other.
As you would expect, karma bit him in the butt as Nao and Joujirou caught him using his supernatural ability while he took an aptitude test. Yep, both of them have supernatural abilities too, invisibility (Nao) and high-speed movement (Joujirou). They basically gave him a scare of his life and forced him to transfer into Hoshinoumi Academy, which have students that have supernatural powers like him. They apparently keep these powers until adulthood. Still, it’s pretty funny the girl he tried to date dumped him in the end after realizing something. Hopefully, he will learn a lesson that cheating your way to success never ends well.
On the other hand, the characters are pretty enjoyable. Yuu’s little sister, Ayumi is probably the best character so far since she is so innocent and energetic. Even when he feels down, she seems to care about him quite a lot. As for Nao, she is pretty interesting, although she is pretty cold towards him. Hopefully, she will warm up to him eventually as the show goes on. Still, it’s surprising to see that the same voice actors (Sakura Akane and Uchida Maaya) who voiced Hoto and Sharo in Gochuumon are voicing Nao and Yusa respectively.
Overall, I have to admit that the first episode is more enjoyable than I expected. From the look of the next episode, we will see Yuu adjust to life at a new school with Yusa being introduced next week. It makes me wonder how she will interact with him since she can speak to the dead.
Wow this was a great episode that set up things nicely and it looks like Nao has her own little team of x-men like characters to stop the bad power users and bring them to her side, but for what? Is there a greater threat out there or is she just gathering the powers for something else? I guess we will learn soon and YES! I liked Ayumi she was at least fun to watch unlike her brother Yuu who comes off as a Lelouch like figure from Code Geass.
I didn’t think of X-Men before while watching this show, but it something like that… still, I wonder what the drama is going to be as it develops.
Didn’t really expect it to be this good really. I just hope the other main characters are gonna be interesting as Yuu. Now all we need is some bald guy in a wheel chair, and we got ourselves an animu x-men.
Hopefully the character development will be better considering that they have fewer characters to develop. Still, I wonder the drama will be.
