Fall 2014 Anime Season First Impressions and Site Updates – Ore Twintail and Shirobako

As the dust finally settles on the first week of the fall anime season, it’s time to share my remaining first impressions for Ore, Twintail ni narimasu and Shirobako.

If you haven’t already, check out my first impressions for Amagi Brilliant Park and Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works I shared earlier in the week.

Ore, Twintail ni narimasu

Yep, Twin Red is adorable.
Yep, Twin Red is adorable.

How do I even describe this show? It’s Rikka and Sanae 1 becoming magical girl warriors to save the world from some evil force from outer space that wants to eradicate twin tails?

Souji is the main character that is obsessed over girls with twin tails. His childhood friend, Tsube Aika finds it creepy. Apparently, he receives a bracelet from a white-haired woman named Thousars that allows him to transform into a cute twin tailed magical girl warrior named Tail Red. After witnessing the student council president having her twin tails snatched away from her, he/she decides to fight.

While the battle is what you would expect from any magical girl show, besides Twin Red/Souji becoming surprised and ecstatic over becoming a girl with twin tails, I find the battle rather hilarious. The reaction the lizard villain gave when she freaks out over the idea of having him touching her twin tails before he exploded was hilarious. Even so, I find Twin Red rather cute and I won’t be surprised if Souji decides to transform at is own will just to enjoy his/her transformation by wear cute outfits. Aside from that, the show is surprisingly and ridiculously enjoyable.

Shirobako

Ema is doing her best.
Ema trying her best to improve her skills.

Back in 2010, I wrote an editorial on the harsh reality of how anime is produced (I am planning to rewrite this in the future). While making Anime can be fun, people who work on anime live hard lives because they are paid very little and most often than not, have to work overnight just to meet the deadline. Shirobako is an original production that shows the behind the scenes of the Japanese Animation Industry with a group of girls who want to make it big in the industry.

While the first episode has a lot of things happens, it already showed some of the difficulties Aoi and her peers face. Apparently, Exodus, a magical girl anime became a hit after the premiere. Shortly after, they face some difficulties after Murphy’s Law settled in. Apparently, a key animator didn’t do his job properly and they had to get some outside help to complete it.

Off the bat, we know that making Anime is not going to easy. Hopefully, viewers will appreciate the work the production staff and voice actors puts into every episode in a show as time goes on. Overall, I think this show so far takes an interesting and fictional perspective on the current state of the industry and hopefully, it will allow PA Works recover from the failure known as Glasslip.

Other Updates

Patreon Campaign Launched

Before I started paying for my own hosting back in late 2010, I was operating on free hosting that brought me headaches from unexpected downtime. While hosting costs are not as expensive as they were in the 2000s, it’s a cost of running an Anime blog without being bound to the restrictions of WordPress.com. Believe it or not, running an Anime Blog takes a lot of time and effort since one has to maintain the site, come up ideas for posts/editorials, proofread posts, etc. Although I enjoy sharing my passion for Anime and Japanese video games and have been doing so for nearly 6 years, I put advertisements on the site with the hope of offsetting the cost. So far, efforts have been fruitless as ad revenue barely covers the costs (plus, Google won’t pay out until it reaches $100).

Considering that various Youtubers and a few anime bloggers are already doing this, I’m launching a Patreon campaign to offset some the costs of running this blog so I can continue what I enjoy doing. If you enjoy my content and wish to help me out, feel free to pledge whatever amount you want. Once you pledged, I will add you to the credits section on the about page. Every February, I will mention all the supporters who contributed over the past year in the yearly anniversary post.

If the goal of 3 dollars a month is reached, I will remove advertisements from the website and any extra funding will be used only to improve the site (such as adding HTTPS/SSL support for privacy). Regardless, all the content on this blog will remain accessible for free to everyone.

Safari Notifications

Just recently, I have added a new way to subscribe to this blog using a feature in OS X Mavericks and Yosemite called “Safari Notifications.” When I make a new post, you will automatically be notified. Although this is limited to Safari, Chrome and Firefox support will come once they implement push notifications. To unsubscribe, go to Preferences > Notications. I agree that Ore, Twintail ni narimasu is so absurd and ridiculous that it is hard not to enjoy.

Shirobako has impressed me thus far as well. After several anime about making manga, it is refreshing to see one about making anime. Even though trying to keep up with all of the names was a little difficult in the first episode, I enjoyed the frantic pacing. Two episode slowed the pacing down a bit, but it was able to focus on the creative conflict much better because of it.

While I don’t have much to say, I’m enjoying the Fall season quite a lot and I’m not disappointed by the choices I made so far. While there may be a few more shows I want to cover, I didn’t have the time.
