Clannad – Kyou’s Arc – Final Impressions

December 24, 2009 by Chikorita157 1 Comment
Sorry, this kiss was only a practice

If you have recalled, I have written a review about Kyou’s arc several months ago. However, the visual novel contained a lot more plot, which was missing… The actual Kyou’s arc in the visual novel is a big emotional roller coaster ride towards the end of her arc compared to the OVA… Well heres why…

While the anime had some of the important parts, it’s still missing alot. The most important is Ryou’s and Tomoya’s first date with each other with Kyou following them. They go into this shop which sells jewelry and they mentioned a tanzanite (blue) and amethyst (violet, the one you supposed to choose). After Kyou realizes, she interrupts and they go look for something for Tomoya.

Another moment is when Ryou set the second date on a Monday since it was a holiday and she needed to go on a orientation . While Tomoya was walking in town, Kyou finds him while she was walking Botan. he buys something important, tarot cards that she wants Tomoya to give Ryou as a gift. They go to the spot where Kyou first found Botan and told the story how she met Botan, when he was abandoned by his parents. Knowing that Botan’s old home will be gone in the future, Tomoya acknowledges that Kyou’s home have became a important place for Botan, regardless what happens to his place. After they practice kissing, Tomoya and Kyou part in their separate ways. On Sunday, Tomoya goes buy another gift since he would feel guilty if he just gives Ryou the tarot cards that Kyou brought. He goes back to the same shop and actually buys the amethyst pendant that he forgets on Monday’s date. Once Ryou receives the tarot cards, she tell Tomoya’s fortune with them,

After eating and hanging around with Ryou, they go to the fortune telling machine and they had their fortune told to them which reads.

This week, the two of you will deal with a small problem. As someone who wants to think seriously about everything, your partner might get tired of every good remedy you think about. However, you should try to avoid forcing your opinion. You should realize many things if you put yourself on your partner’s position. You should try to be bold. If given a chance to talk, avoid using the phone, instead do it in person.
Your lucky items are: umbrella, chocolate.
Your lucky color: blue

Afterwards, they kissed.

However, things started to get worse. Rumors started to spread that Kyou and Tomoya was going out with each other, which starts to trouble Ryou. Next day, Kyou tells Sunohara in a courtyard after school that she try to confess his love with her. You supposed to Call Out (Running away leads to a bad end, ironically), but you couldn’t. You find out from Sunohara that Kyou likes Tomoya when he asks this question:

Kyou, you like Okazaki-kun, don’t you?
– Sunohara

She tries to deny it, but it was not convincing. Sunohara notices Tomoya was watching and Kyou walks away.

After that day, Ryou tries to become more like her older sister and Kyou starts to avoid you. Tomoya starts to have aches in his chest and his bad feelings because of the conflict between Ryou and Kyou.

On a third date, they go to the shop and Ryou buys the tanzanite pendant. This is when Tomoya realizes that he bought the wrong color, he buys the other one for Ryou. Ryou becomes anxious because her fortune she had in the morning was bad since something drastic might change in the future.

On Founder’s Day, Ryou and Tomoya hangs out and Ryou notices that there was ice cream on Tomoya’s face. She took her finger, wiped it and puts it in her mouth. Afterwards, she kisses Tomoya again and after the kiss, Tomoya notices Kyou was in tears and ran away.

Next day, he had another date with Ryou again, and he started to become very uneasy because of the incident yesterday. After they dine and went to other places, the went to the fortune machine, which gave a bad result.

This time, you will probably get into an argument because of a trivial thing.Hesitation brings anxiety, and anxiety brings hesitation. If you don’t wish to lose your thoughts, the one thing you can do is put an effort towards your companion. If you understand each other well, your relationship will strengthen.Do not be impatient.
Your lucky item is: silverwork, jewel.
Your lucky color is: red.

How ironic… At the end of the day when Ryou kissed him again, he starts to feel terrible.
Next day, after Ryou and Tomoya had lunch, a female student revealed that Kyou went home.

During class, the clouds darken and it started to rain. Tomoya notices Botan and he leaves the classroom. He follows him and finds Kyou, drench in the rain. She tells him not to come, but he does. Kyou reveals that she had feelings for Tomoya and ever since Ryou and Tomoya got together, she can’t see them the same anymore and thinking she can’t even go to school anymore. Kyou was also afraid of confessing her love for Tomoya since if she was rejected, she couldn’t talk together as friends anymore and she kept in her feelings. Tomoya embraces her. After awhile, Kyou finally leaves and Tomoya tries to confront Ryou. If you have picked all the right flags, Ryou embraces Tomoya and will try to kiss him, but doesn’t happen. Ryou leaves, and you couldn’t say those words.

Next day, you ask for advice for the best way to solve the problem to Sunohara, and Tomoya was given some advice. Kyou and a few other girls will look at your fortune in the tarot cards, which reveals pretty much the same thing… It’s going to be bad. You try to clarify this the next day after school, but Ryou tries to kiss you again until you said stop. Ryou runs out of the classroom again and you were unable to say those words. Next day, you left school before homeroom and at Sunohara’s room. You start hitting him with a dictionary making Sunohara think that Tomoya is a brute like Kyou and he hits Sunohara more, which leads him being dragged out and the Rugby Player telling that Ryou was looking for you. By that time, Tomoya finds out that the pendent he bought is what Kyou wanted. Tomoya tries to find her and you eventually find her in the court yard and said he doesn’t want to hurt Ryou anymore because he was indulging on her kindness and saying the one he likes is her older sister, Kyou. Then, she suddenly hugs Tomoya and starts kissing him. Tomoya tells her to stop, when Kyou calls out his name. Tomoya finds out it was Kyou instead of Ryou because of her hair. This is when Kyou reveals her true feelings and confesses to Tomoya saying that she always liked him… Afterwards, they kissed..

Awww... This is so cute... Kyou is love. :p

Back in the classroom, Ryou tells Tomoya the fun memories she had with him and Ryou went back to being friends with Tomoya.

In the ending scene, Kyou reveals that Ryou found another boyfriend at her work and her boyfriend had a cute face (Hint: It’s Hiiragi Kappei) and Kyou promises Tomoya that she will grow her hair long quickly so he would like her more, although she doesn’t mind.

It’s because I love you!
– Fujibayashi Kyou

Final Thoughts

Kyou has always been my favorite character not only because she is one of the best Tsundere I have seen (No, Touka don’t qualify for s***), but her arc seems to be as normal as it can get in real life. Kyou’s arc may look confusing since you need to choose the right flags, or you may end up having to do the game over again, but it was satisfying. You notice that Kyou becomes less tsun and more dere towards the end of the arc… Well, it’s better that way than over the top tsundere characters voiced by the Tsundere Queen, Kugimiya Rie.

Some parts that may annoy you… “I don’t want to hurt Ryou…” Yep, there was some indecisiveness in this arc, but is only the surface compared to School Days. The arc is a big emotional roller coaster towards the end when you find out that Kyou actually likes Tomoya, even though she won’t admit it for Ryou’s sake and runs off crying after she sees Tomoya and Ryou kissing. The ending was very cute, though… Kyou is love… :p

Compared to the Anime, it had most of the important parts, but missing alot. The tarot cards and fortune telling were the most import parts of this story because it foreshadows what will happen in the future… Also, the pendants were also missing from the anime, signify Tomoya’s true feelings about Kyou when he buys the amethyst pendant.

Another aspect I forgot to mention is when Sunohara asks Tomoya if he actually liked Ryou… this becomes important because in the end, he finds out that he actually likes Kyou instead.

Otherwise, it’s one of my favorite arcs ever… obviously because it have a tsundere in it. :p

Verdict

9.7/10
