Egao no Taenai Shokuba desu. – Episode 8 – Meeting the Fashionable Cover Designer and the Seinen Mangaka

November 24, 2025 by Chikorita157 2 Comments
There is another lady who is a big fan of Nana’s works.

After Nana and Mizuki meet Nekonote and Touko, who pay a visit to Nana’s apartment, Kaede wants Nana to do another series for her and her only. However, there is another opportunity that comes for Nana as she releases the second volume of her manga.

Kaede introduces Tatsunami to Nana.
Nana gets a bit excited for a moment there.

As Nana meets with Kaede, checking her work over again, a woman comes by. Apparently, she shared how big a fan she is of Nana’s series. Nana wonders who this lady is and finds out it’s Tatsunami, the editor-in-chief of Clover. Apparently, she has an opportunity for Nana to get featured in the magazine. Funny how she gets all excited about finding out that the whole office noticed her yelling.

Nana gets a bit scared given that Tatsunami put a series on hold.

Eventually, they went into a meeting room. Apparently, the series that was supposed to be featured got turned into a JDrama adaptation. However, a scandal involving an actor has led to the adaptation going on an indefinite hiatus. As a result, the serialization got put on hold as the mangaka decided to take a break. Tatsunami thought it was a good idea to feature Nana’s title, given that her second volume just came out and her popularity in the polls. Of course, Kaede heard the news before Nana. Of course, she only has one week to get it done

Nana and Kaede meets their fashionable designer, Tsukinawa.
Tsukinawa sees Nana as a literal blob.

With that, Nana decides to do her best as she works with a designer. After meeting the designer, Tsukinawa, she looks like a fashionable lady, despite being clumsy. Nana is amazed as Tsukinawa gives her the designer vibes. She, of course, worked with Nana on the design, although Nana became a literal blob after realizing she hadn’t brought a rough draft before apologizing.

Thankfully, Tsukinawa is very nice.
Nana of course understands her audience as she is a regular reader of Clover.

While Tsukinawa is nice, it’s funny how Kaede says she is just forgiving of the mistakes they made. Thankfully, she can get it done in a few days. Surprisingly, the meeting was productive, although Nana wished she could take the time explaining her series to her. While Tsukinawa had a meal after their meeting, she tried to cook the same dish, but her attempts didn’t quite work out. Tsukinawa admits that she can’t make good design without understanding the essence of the work. In a way, this is quite an interesting metaphor, emphasizing the importance of understanding the basic source material from which one is creating an illustration.

Funny how Tsukinawa compares Nana to a vintage iMac of all things, running the Classic Mac OS.
In comparison of a loading screen from an actual vintage Macintosh.

Funny how Tsukinawa mentioned that she is in charge of the cover design after the meeting ended. Nana became surprised as she should have asked before. Funny how Kaede becomes frustrated with how easygoing Tsukinawa and, especially, Nana are. I find it amusing how Tsukinawa compares Nana to an ancient computer. I find it hilarious that the computer is an iMac running Mac OS 9. I guess most Generation Z won’t get this, but it was interesting to see that here. Still, it’s funny how Nana gets emotional when she’s lectured about being too slow with her work. Meanwhile, Tsukinawa is eating this up, thinking Nana and Kaede share how much they love each other. Also, interesting that her cat T-shirt cost over 50,000 yen, which is basically about $333.

Nana is happy to meet Nagomi again.
Mizuki witnesses ero-manga for the first time.

In the second half, Nagomi, one of her former co-workers and also a fellow mangaka, came to visit. She wants to help Nana with her cover and see what she thinks of it. Of course, she reveals that she makes ero-manga in a Seinen magazine. It’s funny how Mizukl thinks Seinen means adult content. I felt the same way when I got back into Anime in 2008. Still, it’s not necessarily the case, as it focuses on a variety of stories across genres, including, you guessed it, schoolgirl and cute-girls-doing-cute-things slice-of-life series in comparison to Jousei, which is just a grown-up version of Shoujo manga, but with more mature themes. Also, it’s interesting that Nagomi says many female mangaka make Seinen series, which is about right, given the number of Manga Time Kirara series I’ve read. However, they’re, of course, void of adult content.

Despite the initial Mizuki being grossed out by it, she seems to be emotionally moved by the story.
This is Nagomi’s idea of Mizuki helping her out.
Somehow, despite the nudity, Nana seems impressed by Nagomi’s works.

However, after reading it, Mizuki looks pretty emotional, though she’s blushing quite a lot. We saw a flashback of Nana seeing Nagomi’s work and being impressed by how Nagomi draws naked bodies, which seems complicated for obvious reasons. Still, it’s funny how Nagomi wants Mizuki to help her out. They ended up taking reference photos of Touko and Mizuki in maid and cheerleader outfits. Of course, Nagomi thought they should wear swimsuits instead. At least Nagomi gives some suggestions to Nana on how to improve the cover.

@chikorita157 @chikorita157@chikorita157.com I honestly enjoyed the whole thing, it was a good episode. The iMac joke, how the main character and her editor doesn’t have their ducks in a row at all, and the co-assistant showing up and it turns out she’s got an R18 manga.

I’d say it has turned out better than what I expected. Lovable characters and you just want more.
