Last time, Kurumi and Yuzu managed to pull off a spell to deal with the pit of doom that Kurumi accidentally unleashed. Of course, Mr. Harris wore a hooded cape as he kidnapped Suzuki outside of Kurumi’s home. Not only that, Kurumi and Yuzu receive an offer to take an exam to get into Magumi, that is, while something unfolds underneath it all. At the same time, everyone prepares for the Rettoran festival.
As expected, things were a bit fishy last time. Not only is it convenient that Harris, on the modern magic side, saw Suzuki as a threat, but Now that Harris imprisoned Suzuki in the basement, he eliminated the threat of the Ancient Magic faction against his plans.
Meanwhile, the preparations for the Rettoran festival are underway. It’s funny how the Magumi faction can do multiple activities, but the standard class can’t. After all, the standard class couldn’t develop one idea, so they eventually combined all the ideas into Rube Goldberg yakisoba, which combined all the ideas into one silly idea. It makes me wonder if they will pull it off.
Does it have to do with the seven wonders of Rettoran? Maybe he is using one to trap Suzuki, which explains why he wants to bring Kurumi and Yuzu to his side. If he could get Kurumi and Yuzu on the modern magic faction, it would make the Ancient Magic faction, especially with Suzuki trying to teach Ancient Magic so everyone can use magic. After all, if people can’t use magic, they have less power.
With that, Kurumi seems troubled whether or not to take the exam. After all, she gave up on being a magician, although Maki reminded her that it was initially her dream. Of course, if Kurumi passes, that means saying goodbye to her current class.
Yuzu also revealed that she got the letter and was thinking about taking the test and whether or not to take it. She wants to learn more about Ancient Magic as she realizes its potential thanks to activating spell arrays from a notebook. Yuzu convinces Kurumi to take a chance since they failed the first time after all, so it’s worth taking a second try. Either way, it’s nice to see Yuzu and Kurumi becoming a thing, and Yuzu’s posse becomes jealous of Yuzu spending a lot of time with Kurumi. That is while Maki supports Kurumi in her studies as she prepares to build the set for her class.
Eventually, test day came. We find out that the dog shape-shifting lady found out that Kurumi is taking the test as she talks to the cat nurse. Yep, they are probably in on what is happening in the basement. Not to mention, the Magic Research Club seems suspicious about the Magumi Placement tests, too.
Well, my suspicions are correct that Harris is up to no good. Harris’s first name is Northern, but whatever plan he is cooking, he says that Suzuki won’t be able to stop it. It might concern the seven wonders, which makes me wonder why. Either way, Kurumi has a hunch that something terrible is about to happen. What is it? We’ll find out next time.

@chikorita157 @chikorita157@chikorita157.com I haven’t seen 9 yet, but my favorite part remains Yuzu. It’s interesting to get confirmation that her grandma did indeed go to the magic school. But we still don’t know why she kept that a secret/if she avoided working as one.
I like how they avoid the boring tropes, and it remains one of the more beautiful shows with the watercolor look. I hope we don’t get a bunch of stylistic copies though.
The little “teacher” getting imprisoned tells me things will heat up and she will need to actually use her magic.
A bit sad about the “more powerful than xyz” foreshadowing. Feels like her being able be a magician and overcome her obstacles would be better character development.

Lots of unanswered questions as well. Who is Miss Magician? Is Grandma out of gum?
Was worried that they would make Limone (that’s Yuzu’s minion right?) loose the plot. But it felt more like missing a friend than being a psycho.
I like the writing quite a bit.

Kurumi grandmother being a magician makes me wonder, who is that dog shape shifting person that apparently observes Kurumi and refers her to an older sister.
Of course the plot deepens in the next episode, but obviously Northern sees Suzuki teaching ancient magic as a threat to his plans. After all, the ancient magic faction got driven out of the academy and considered taboo, which probably has something to do with modern magic dominance.

One can only wonder what kind of analogy they are going for. The new magic vs old can be applied to a lot of things after all.
Which is probably for the best, better to be subtle and let the audience create their own experience. Too heavy handed and it gets preachy and that’s not good.
I’ve always enjoyed how a mostly fairly simple story can get deeper simply by adding just a little bit.
That said, I think they nailed the characters. Yuzu could have been awful but they skipped the tired rival stuff and the kids feel a lot more unified as a result.
