Egao no Taenai Shokuba desu. – Episode 4 – Pre-Book Sales Anxieties

October 27, 2025 by Chikorita157 5 Comments
For Nana, Mizuki’s cheering is not enough.

After Nana manages to get the rough idea for chapter 7 done, thanks to going to a Shougi society and Toko helping her out, she faces yet another challenge. Besides the manuscripts being due, she also has her first volume to release.

Mizuki in a cheerleading outfit.
Sadly, it’s not enough.

I find it funny how Mizuki is wearing a cheerleading outfit as she cheers for Nana. Of course, Nana feels demotivated since not only does she have the manuscripts for chapter 7 to do, but she also has to do some pre-book release activities. I find it funny that Nana complains about Mizuki cheering for her.

Mizuki takes advise from Kaede.
Nana talking to Kaede over the phone.
Thanks to Kaede, Nana becomes motivated.

Obviously, the only thing that motivates her is Kaede calling her, complimenting her work while guilt-tripping her for not finishing those manuscripts. The funny thing is, her compliments were what really motivated her to finish it. Funny how Mizuki feels disappointed that this is the only thing that inspires her.

The next day, Nana has a stack of manga as Kaede helps her out. We find out how Kaede became Nana’s editor and got her works off the ground. It’s evident that the previous guy, Nana, didn’t approve of any of her work. For the past month, Nana hasn’t done anything.

Obviously, Nana’s previous editor turned Nana into a blob.

Funny how Nana depicts herself as a multi colored blob that kind of reminds me of Hitori. The funny thing is, she becomes herself when Kaede is willing to give her idea a chance to prove him wrong. Going back today, Kaede thinks they pulled it off, and the only thing left is for people to read the manga.

Nana meets the lady responsible for sales for her manga.

The next day, Kaede introduces Ikenami, who is part of the sales department, and who seems excited for Nana’s manga. She appears to be a fan, though it’s funny to see Nana showing a lack of energy. They visited a bookstore that had autographed copies on sale. Funny how Nana realizes that if she autographs the stack of books and they don’t sell, she is afraid they won’t.

She has this many to sign.
Yes, Nana even takes a photo with two ladies that decided to buy her manga.

The worker assures her that there will be people who buy it. She seems confident in Nana since the character looks cute on the cover. Of course, when Nana saw someone wanting to purchase a copy of her manga, she was happy and willing to take a photo with the young ladies who bought the copy. It’s funny to see her act all nervous when she asks. At least Nana realizes that manga is something she works on with other people.

Nana got upset over her manga being reprinted, or rather a misunderstanding.

With that, Kaede, Toko, Ikenami, and Mizuki celebrate the first manga release with Nana. Yep, they had some beers and alcohol, but the funny thing is that when Nana realizes her manga is getting reprinted, she acts all surprised. Apparently, Kaede told her about it and made corrections, but Nana didn’t know that the correction thing is about reprinting. Nana realizes that this might be a sign that her manga is doing well.

Kaede comes clean about the reprint.

Of course, Kaede took Nana to a bar for a private meeting while Ikenami, Mizuki, and Toko do their own thing. Nana knows that she has more manuscripts to do after the new year, but Kaede just wanted to apologize. Yes, over the fact that she wasn’t clear with Nana that her book got reprinted, since she was happy for Nana, but got a little too carried away as a result.

At least they have a new goal now.

Funny how Kaede blushes, saying that Nana isn’t the only one who is nervous about the book release. After all, if it does poorly, it will reflect on her, too. Nana is happy that she found out how Kaede feels about Nana’s work and supporting her. With that, at least Nana now has a goal to continue working with everyone on her team for many years to come, and, of course, to sell 50,000 copies as well. I guess with the members on Nana’s team, she can most likely pull it off.

@chikorita157 I keep wondering where the other three characters from the opening are. Also I can’t figure out if it’s meant to be a romantic overtone to things. Kinda feels like it, but I could be wrong.

Overall enjoying the show. Was a bit worried on account of the overworked aspect of workers in Japan, especially entertainment like a mangaka. But thus far it more seems about the MC’s state than anything.

Also kinda funny how the computer equipment seems to get a lot of love. The screens they draw on (name escapes me) look pretty realistic.

They will probably show up sooner than later. Toko is already introduced and the braided blonde haired appeared in the next episode. But otherwise, the show is fun thus far.

Yep, it’s nice to see them using what probably looks like your Apple Silicon iMacs and Wacom display tablets. Apparently, the application being featured used in drawing is Clip Paint Studio

@chikorita157 I clearly want more from watching it, which is a good sign. But I feel that 12 episodes, which I assume is the norm now, won’t be nearly enough to tell much story:(

I’ve seen a “a day in the life of a mangaka” but I honestly wish I could see more. Well I did see a guest on a show that works as a mangaka, but she seemed a bit unhinged in a “anyone working less than 25hrs a day and doesn’t produce ten billion pages per second is a bad human being” kind of way.

I love anime/manga, but I love workers rights more. Nothing good comes from overworking people.

If the quality stays up I wish it gets more seasons.

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 We’ll get a 10 second scene where they are walking the dog, then everyone forgets someone has a dog.
