Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi is probably the anime of this season featuring cute young adult women engaging in various club activities centered around food. It makes for a fun show, accompanied by some delicious-looking food.
Kawai Mako is an introverted first-year college student with an interest in cooking. However, she doesn’t have many friends. However, when she sees three young women, Shion, Kurea, and Tsutsuji, trying to form a Food Culture Research Club, Mako recognizes the red-haired girl, Ogawa Shion, who attended the same school as Mako. They are looking for one more member so they can form a club.
While she initially turned down the offer to join the club, Mako changes her mind after having katsu don at the restaurant Kurea, where she works at a restaurant her parents own. After Kurea mentions that Shion can’t stop talking about Mako, she decides to join with the hope of cooking and eating various foods.
The amusing thing is that Shion initially created the club just to have a place to hang out. However, when the clerk lady came by to warn them that they had to participate in actual club activities as stated on their application, or their club would be disbanded. With that, they prepared various meals, visited places around Japan, and engaged in numerous activities related to food.
As expected, as with a cute girl doing various things around food, I do like the characters. I think Shion, Nana, and Tsutsuji are perhaps the most enjoyable characters, primarily because of their personalities. Shion, of course, is the cheerful girl of the group. I find it amusing how she often finds herself in unfortunate situations, such as hiding money so she won’t spend it, yet never hides it despite having all the clues. Also, it’s amusing to see her reaction when she accidentally drives onto the highway and is not accustomed to driving on it.
Of course, there is Nana, who used to have black hair with bangs covering her eyes, which reveals her introverted nature, except when she is around people she is comfortable with. When she tried to start a puzzle club, she couldn’t get anyone interested because of her appearance. Even after changing to look more fashionable, her crippling anxiety made her unable to interact with potential members. In the end, she gave up on creating the club. The funny thing, Nana’s crippling anxiety is probably worse than Hitori’s anxiety. Still, it’s weird to see Nana react when she tries to interact with someone she doesn’t know.
Next, there is Tsutsuji, who is Nana’s close friend. Yep, she is the shortest of the group. She is usually laid-back as she sits in her sheep-themed chair and even plays the ukulele while the girls do their cooking. She also wears a sheep hoodie and even dresses up as a sheep. It seems as if sheep is her favorite animal, although her name sounds like the Japanese word for sheep, Hitsuji (羊, ひつじ). I find it funny and cute when Tsutsuji gets caught by the clerk lady. That is when the building is closed, and Shinon and Nana don’t want to get caught.
That said, there are many enjoyable moments. Yes, the beach episode is great, obviously, but there are Mako’s weight woes. She realizes that she has gained a significant amount of weight since joining the club. The skirt she just bought doesn’t fit. Of course, she went on a diet and exercise with Tsutsuji and Nana. The sad part is that even when she managed to fit in the skirt, she realizes that she has to keep doing this, besides not realizing there is a thing called cheat days. The funny thing is that she thinks it’s okay to get some more snacks in; it wouldn’t hurt her. Yep, all her progress will go to waste.
That said, I enjoyed Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi. Like with mono, it’s nice to see the girls do various activities involving food while making some pleasant memories. As expected, the beach episode and the girls making pizza and having fun on the beach are nice. In that regard, Zatsu Tabi and mono kind of dropped the ball, as they teased it, but it did not happen. That said, if you enjoy cute girls doing cute things kind of shows, you will most likely enjoy this one. Perhaps have a full stomach before watching, as the food looks so good that it will make you hungry.
