Before the start of the new year, the first of the of the winter anime began airing. Sorairo Utility, while I thought was a TV series is just a one-shot 14-minute OVA. I guess it’s time to share my impressions of it.
The story focuses on Minami who saw a girl Haruka practicing some shots at a golfing rage. After seeing how skilled she is, Minami seems so impressed by her shot that she wants to give golf a try. She joined a golfing group with Ayaka and Haruka, who enamored her by the shot she made.
Of course, Miani finds out how hard golf is as a beginner. While her goal is to get a Par, which is the number of strokes needed to complete a course. If you play golf or a video game such as Mario Golf, negative scores (or getting birdies and eagles) are better and positive ones, which happen with each stroke beyond Par are bad. Before they started the game, Haruka wrote the members initials, “HAM” as a good luck charm.
As expected, Minami ends up shooting out of bounds on the first shot. Not too surprising since she couldn’t control the ball properly. Of course, Haruka and Ayaka had little difficulty to shoot the ball into the desired place on the course. It’s not too surprising since Minami is still a beginner. What is more frustrating is missing the hole on the green. Yep, Minami is a bit too nervous. What is more frustrating is that she almost had the ball go into the hole, but it circled around it.
As they head to the next course, it seems that Minami feels a bit down. Of course, Haruka cheers her up. Eventually, they had to wait for the others to finish and Ayame decides to take a selfie together. I find Minami robotic face reaction quite hilarious. Even Haruka and Ayame had a good laugh and offered to retake it. Of course, Minami thought it was funny and wanted the photo.
After going through more courses, the girls had lunch. Minami still feels down at she had a katsu-don. I guess she needs all the calories she needs to make it to the end. Of course, at the last hole, Minami eventually made a nice shot. Of course, nervousness caught up to her she lost her chance of making a par. At least she experiences the feeling of having a stroke that she can become proud of.
Overall, while one 14-minute episode is not enough to flesh out the girls’ personalities, it was a fun 14 minutes. It kind of makes me want to see more. Sure, the animation is rough in some areas. But the joys of seeing cute girls have fun golfing. Don’t feel too down as there is Birdie Wing that focuses on two women golfing that will air sometime in 2022.
It was an enjoyable watch. Would love for this to become a full series one day.
Hopefully, but we’ll see if that comes into fruition.
