Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon – Final Review

In the past few years, Kyoto Animation has made some very enjoyable shows, namely both seasons of Hibike Euphonium. They did not disappoint in regards on how the relationships turned out in the end. When it comes to comedy mixed with fantasy, as of recently, Musaigen no Panthom World gave viewers mixed feelings. With that, will Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon live up to expectations?

The story focuses on a normal life of a female otaku programmer who obsess over maids. After becoming drunk one day, she climbed up a mountain and sees an injured dragon named Tohru. Kobayashi then took the sword out of Tohru’s tail, thus saving her. Kobayashi promises her that she can stay with her. After Tohru listened to Kobayashi’s rants about maids and stuff, she decides to become one without knowing what they do.

The next day, Kobayashi prepares for work without knowing what happened the previous night. When she is about to leave, she sees Tohru in human form wearing a maid’s outfit. Tohru decides to devote her life to Kobayashi since she saved her. Kobayashi eventually meets another dragon girl that comes by her apartment. This time, it’s a little girl named Kanna Kamui who is banned from her own world. In other words, Kobayashi’s life is about to become exciting.

I have to admit that Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon is probably the most enjoyable comedy from Kyoto Animation for a while. It’s not surprising given the lovable cast and how they drive the comedy. While there are a lot of hilarious moments in this show, there are some notable ones. Some examples include Kanna eating bugs whole, Saikawa obsessing over Kanna’s cuteness, Lucoa getting into trouble for showing too much skin and the wacky performance of Little Match Girl. It’s not surprising since the show knows that it doesn’t take itself seriously,

As for the characters, I find most of the cast enjoyable. The main character, Kobayashi is a normal woman who has otaku interests. She is usually emotionless, except when she is drunk or angry. This is evident in the last episode when she confronts Tohru’s dad. Either way, she is normally nice and she also helps Elma with programming when she started working there. As you would expect, Tohru gets envious because of it.

With that, Tohru is a dragon girl who dedicates her life to Kobayashi. This is why she strives to become a better maid and willing to go against her father’s wishes. As you would expect, she becomes overprotective towards her love interest, especially when Elma shows up. She also tries to serve Kobayashi her tail as food, which becomes a running gag, which Kobayashi always refuses.

As for the other characters, there are several notable ones. Kanna, who received a lot of popularity given her cute looks is an adorable character who just wants friends. It’s not surprising since she has a child-like appearance. There is no wonder why Riko, who is a tsundere instantly have a huge crush on her at first sight. Riko also have an older sister who calls herself Georgie. She is obsesses with maids just like Kobayashi.

Also, there are the other dragons as well. There is Fafnir, who is a butler that stays with Makoto spending time playing video games and becomes tolerant towards humans. Second is Lucoa. She is based on a god that the Aztecs worshiped, but gender flipped. Compared to the other dragons, She is the most attractive, which is not surprising given her G-cup breasts. She is obsesses over Shouta, who is a young wizard that looks like a girl. It’s not surprising given that Lucoa dressed him as a girl. Lastly, there is Elma, who is Tohru’s arch rival and also have a sweet tooth. She eventually works in the same company as Kobayashi.

Overall, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon is probably the most enjoyable comedy fantasy anime that Kyoto Animation made in a while. I thought the comedy worked well because of the cast. Sure, it would be nice to see more character development with Lucoa and Elma, but it’s a small shortcoming. Also, I thought the yuri potential is good. While Kobayashi’s or Tohru confessed to each other yet, Kobayashi eventually stands up to Tohru’s dad. On the other hand, Kanna and Riko meets expectations, which is not surprising given that Riko has a huge crush on Kanna. With that, hopefully we will see more in the future.
