Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru – Episode 1 – Curiosity over Bones

October 7, 2015 by Chikorita157 2 Comments
After looking at her kiss a skull, you know that she is strange.
After looking at her kiss a human skull under a cherry blossom tree, you know that she is strange.

It has been a while since I have watched an anime that focuses on mystery. With that, it’s time to focus on another one, which involves an ordinary high school student boy and a young adult woman who seems to be obsessed with bones.

I have to admit that after watching the first episode, this show was interesting mostly because of Sakurako herself. Sure, Shoutaro is your typical ordinary high school student male lead, but there is something intriguing about Sakurako. Sure, she is a very pretty appearance since she is from a rich family, but apparently, she doesn’t like being around people. It’s quite obvious not from the music she hears and such, but rather her obsession over bones of dead things. Not so surprising since her uncle works in forensics.

It seems that Shoutaro has a strange relationship with Sakurako.
It seems that Shoutaro has a strange relationship with Sakurako.

I have to admit that her obsession and curiosity over bones is interesting to watch when Shoutaro finds a remains of a human skull that is over 100 years old on a beach (and yes, she can tell how old it from taking a look at it and finding out it’s from a young woman from the shape of it). After he discovers it, she obsesses over it and wants to keep it. Of course, when Shoutaro calls the police over it and took both of them to the police station, Sakurako finds an investigation scene and becomes curious to investigate it almost like Eru from Hyouka.

Yep, she is curious.
Yep, she is curious.

From the look of the first mystery, it seems like it’s a murder mystery that is disguised as a double suicide. Sure, some might find this mystery somewhat mediocre, but like with most mystery stories, I have a feeling that the creator wants to show her investigating skills before diving into more difficult and interesting mysteries. While people might complain about her barging in the investigation and getting a free pass since they know her uncle, I think it will be interesting to see some of her forensics skills in action next time to find out how the perpetrator killed them and who carried it out.

This is what you get from taking away the skull she wanted to keep aside from not getting any shrimp.

In short, I have to admit that the first episode is enjoyable and interesting. Sure, Sakurako is a very eccentric woman who loves bones, but I have to admit that she is also attractive.  You would expect her to take thee lead completely, but not so much. It seems that Shoutaro keeps her in check, which makes me wonder what role he will take in the next episode. Also, I wonder what kind of relationship he will develop while solving these mysteries with her since he doesn’t consider her as a friend or in a relationship. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens next time.

I really do hope that kid won’t have such a relation with her. Although it looks like it’s happening anyway, I just hope they don’t go that route. One other thing is that, the mystery part of the show, I hope she doesn’t solve things that easy, maybe there will be one or two hard ones to solve, that should keep me interested.

Given the age gap, probably there won’t be a romantic relationship like in Gosick, but hopefully the mysteries will at least be interesting instead of focusing more on the romantic aspect. We’ll see.
