It seems that Hikari wants payback against the man who went out with his older sister…
While I have negative feelings towards Hikari since he acts like a total bully, I understand that he is only 13. Because of that, he hasn’t matured yet, especially for the fact that his mother passed away when he and Akari was young. Of course, this can also explain why she matured so quickly in order to raise him that she wanted to go out with a man who lives on the surface without realizing it. Still, I don’t think Hikari needs to go and beat up her former boyfriend without hearing his side to the story. Thankfully, Tsumugu’s dad stepped in and taught some sense into him before it got worse. Still, I think Hikari needs to cool it with the random violence or he will end up in jail before he knows it.
Besides the hissy fit that Hikari had, there is more details revealed regarding the reasons behind the restrictions on sea people dating regular humans. It seems that an offspring will not have Ena, a special ability that allows a person breathe underwater if a sea person and a regular human had a child. While one can interpret this as a possible demise of the sea village, I still think it’s possible for humans to gain that ability if it has to do with genes. As seen with Tsumugu’s dad, his skin shines, which indicates the possibility that Tsumugu is a half-breed. Perhaps this time, the offspring will have Ena if he married a sea person and had a baby.
From the look of it, with Hikari finally warming up to Tsumugu, I think things will get better for him when he gains some maturity. Even so, I think his desire of not wanting to go to college or even high school is very foolish considering the poor job prospects without any education. At least his older sister, Akari has some sense.
