Nagi no Asukara – Episode 2 – Forbidden Love

It seems that Manaka will miss the fish that was stuck on her knees.

Manaka might be in love with another boy…

I felt that this episode regained my faith into this show because of the drama. Besides the fact that Hikari is still the most unpleasant male protagonist and that I prefer Tsumugu to him, which is beside the point. It’s quite obvious that he has romantic feelings for Manaka and he fears that she might fall in love with Tsumugu. I think his anger is more about protecting the place he lives because the village he and his friends live is in a decline. We already saw this with their school closing down. To me, what he is doing can potentially be destructive since his negative feelings towards the people who live on land will only push people away, not help his cause.  None of this gets any better with his older sister, Akari getting caught dating another man on land without realizing that she might get banished from the sea village. It makes me wonder if she cares or not since she is more interested in getting a baby girl than anything else.

Sadly, Hikari is just as nasty like last time.
Sadly, Hikari is just as nasty like last time.

In comparison, what I’m seeing with Manaka is that she is a bit more open-minded when it comes to exploring the unknown. I think the reason why she feels that way is because she knows how kind Tsumugu is compared to other humans and how he treats people who live in the ocean equally like everyone else. As time goes by, I think Manaka will realize that the world is a bigger place than the village they live in and perhaps, convince both sides that they should just get along and compromise. If that happens, perhaps the sea village wouldn’t be in the same state like Congress is currently in. Either way, it’s apparent that she is willing to give up life in the village in exchange to discover the unknown and be with Tsumugu.

Things have finally got real!
Things have finally got real!

While things look grim from Hikari, especially for the fact that Akari got caught dating a man from the surface, will the love triangle with Manaka, Hikari and Tsumugu will be just as dramatic and cold like True Tears or even exceed that? I think so for the fact that both have different attitudes when it comes to getting along with humans and sea humans. I think whatever happens to Akari next time will determine Hikari’s ultimate fate. ¶
