Hanasaku Iroha – Episode 18 – Nako’s Other Personality…

August 2, 2011 by Chikorita157 3 Comments
Believe it or not, Nako simply looked adorable in this episode.

After Enishi’s disastrous movie production, Nako finally gets her time in the spotlight….

Like a mermaid, she is unwilling to be herself in the outside world.

For a while now, Nako is a friendly, but a very timid girl when she is at school and work. In contrast to her shyness, her personality is completely different when she is at home looking after her siblings and parents on a daily basis. Her real self is more responsible, cheerful and more outgoing when she is with her family.  This is shown through the mermaid scenes featuring herself who fears being on land.  I have an impression that she is afraid of what people would think about her if she acted herself that she conceals it. This changes when she surprisingly receives a huge raise. She starts to get a feeling that she needs to change her personality in order to maintain expectations of her hard work.

Sadly, she is not looking for men hitting her with this change.

Shortly after she got a raise, I don’t think that Yuina’s suggestion is not the right change that Nako needs. While I admit that her new outfit makes herself look a lot prettier, her personality doesn’t change much, especially she runs away while men hit on her. I always thought she never had a low self-esteem problem, but her work personality taking over her entire life outside of her home. Either way, she only shines through subtly, which gives her customers an enjoyable experience.

Overall, Nako is a very sweet girl who never really gets noticed underneath the popularity of Ohana, Minko and Yuina. She has a very cute appearance and her more cheerful personality is so charming that I would have thought she would be popular with the students, but sadly doesn’t show it. Hopefully with her praise that led to her raise, perhaps she will continue to do what she normally does while she gradually breaks from her work personality.

Besides her story, this episode was an improvement over the last two episodes. I think that the show is at its strongest when the girls are given the spotlight constantly. Either way, I wished that Nako had more another episode to develop since she is a really fun character.

I liked it since Nako is really cute with her hair down… And besides this, Nako as a mermaid reminds me of The Little Mermaid. Also Ohana’s grandmother in these scenes are just funny.
