Stupid Tantei Opera Milky Holmes! It’s not like I want to watch you or anything… but the cuteness pulled me in!
Yeah, I am pretty tsundere when it comes to anime and this is no exception. Tantei Opera Milky Holmes is a magical girl detective story with extremely cute girls fighting against the villains. At the same time, the first episode was pretty brutal since they lost their powers 9 minutes into the first episode. After they lost their powers, things kind of went in a downward spiral.
As the story suggests, the story focuses primarily on the four young female detectives who track down villains and apprehend them. The action sequence in the beginning was decent and it felt like a magical girl series. Sadly, the villains got away and they kind of lose their powers called a “Toy.” As a result, they became pretty useless in the detective school.
Towards the end of the test, the girls were forced to take an amplitude test. The test was a pretty brutal since they failed to defuse the bomb and their memory was destroyed forever. What troubles me is that the student council president did not test their detective skills, but instead their powers. How do you expect the four girls to pass the test without their powers? Don’t you think that is a bit harsh? On top of that, she called for the expulsion for the girls, but she took that back and gave them a three-month probation instead.
Come to think of it, their lost of the toys reminded me of the Power Rangers Movie since they have to work to earn their powers back to fight against the villains at the end of the movie. I’m pretty sure the series will follow the same path with the girls solving small cases and gradually gain their powers back just in time for the finale at the end.
After that fiasco, I think the girls really need to reevaluate the direction things are heading since they lost the team spirit. They did not work as a team when they had to take the test and as a result, they failed. In order to be successful, people have to corporate with each other and use their strengths to help solve the problem. If the girls work hard as a team in their probationary period, I think their powers will eventually come back and they will be back in business.
As for the villains, they are ridiculous. It consists of a very hot woman who masquerades herself as the student council president. In addition, there are like three other guys. Out of the three guys, the tall blond hair guy kind of resembles TK from Angel Beats. It makes me wonder if the same voice actor voices that character… As for the other guys, I have nothing to say about them.
After I watched the first episode, I had mixed feelings since JC Staff produces the show. From what I have heard from the AniBlogosphere, JC Staff’s adaptation Railgun and Ookami-san was pretty disappointing. Considering that the PSP visual novel was conceptual, this is an Anime First. Because of that reason, I have to give Tantei Opera Milky Holmes some slack even though I have low expectations.
