Kimi ni Todoke – Episode 1 – First Impresions

July 6, 2010 by Chikorita157 1 Comment

Whoa you scared the crap out of me... oh wait... What are you doing here?

In real life, the physical appearance of a person is important, especially when you are a girl. The truth is that most people prefer good looks over ugly looking people. This leaves people who are unattractive to have low self-esteem and feel a sense of loneliness.

In Kimi ni Todoke, everyone seems to be scared of Sawako because of her ghost-like appearence. Because of her appearance, everyone thinks she is a bad person. Despite her unattractive appearance, Sawako is actually a nice person who is quiet and shy. It’s easy to sympathize with Sawako since she only wanted to be treated normally and have friends that care about her.

Only one person so far seems to understand her feelings… Meet Kazehaya, a normal boy. He meets Sawako one day on the first day of school. He ends up defending Sawako when he loses the test of courage and the organizers forces Sawako to date her as a result of losing. After the incident, Sawako feels upset that she can never see Kazehaya the same way. However, this wasn’t the case since he promises to see her over the summer.

Oh no... She overheard us!

There are always people that want to humiliate people who are rather unattractive. Yano and Yoshida are viewed as snobby girls as they forced Sawako to act like a ghost to degrade her. Sawako does not notice this since she think that acting like a ghost is a fun activity. Don’t worry, we will see more of this as the season goes on.

The art style is what surprised me the most. The art style in shoujo anime uses a rather different style. Its somewhat simplistic and realistic style, which may not look as appealing to some people. Don’t let the art style bother you. It’s one of those series that you can appreciate by getting into the content of the story of going through Sawako’s difficulties of being more open and being accepted by other people with her personality, not her looks.

The first episode was good. After the bathroom scene in the beginning, I felt sorry for Sawako instantly after she scared away the girls in the bathroom. Hopefully we learn more about her and other stuff in the next few episodes.

Yeah, I’m watching it because it has Noto Mamiko in it, but that isn’t the only reason.

Verdict

8.65/10

hehe, the animation, background and music almost resembles a ghost movie in that bathroom scene. Anime often over-expresses, but that’s where the fun lies, doesn’t it?
