A reason I’m finally ditching MyAnimeList for Melative

January 17, 2010 by Chikorita157 6 Comments

With the recent outroar with the MyAnimeList switching to a new layout and breaking the Unofficial MyAnimeList API, what is there left for me? With the new layout being harder to use, no complete official API and my wasted 3 months in making my own MAL Client and being broken after that I have been felt betrayed, the feeling that MAL doesn’t care about the users and want to force changes on users and not have developers make their own clients.

I have also lost hope with the Official API which have been untouched for several months and still lacking in functionality. When I start using Melative more and more and after the change, I thought to myself… do we really need MyAnimeList anymore? MyAnimeList is simply what AnimePlanet and AniDB is… and they still can’t track other Japanese media such as J-drama, light novels and visual novels.

Melative is the key for the future… It supports a wide variety of media, will be federated in the future and also it’s more open, as it’s using open source technologies.  This reminds me of one quote that a commenter, kimaguresan wrote:

I really think that not being open in this day and age will doom you at some point or another.

Everything is about open services and if services don’t provide a open and workable api, they are going to fail. I am feeling that this is true with MyAnimeList with the incomplete API and clients having to resort to HTML scraping because of the lack of a full API. No developer should ever have to scrap HTML just to make a client for a service. It’s just like Twitter not providing a API and developers having to scrap HTML to make their own clients. HTML scraping is time consuming work and it’s not for the faint of heart.

So why Melative succeed and MyAnimeList fails? Simply because of the reasons of not being open enough and forcing unnecessary changes like the layout design over fixing what is broken and a lack of a fully functional API. This is why MyAnimeList is not going to have a future as they are continuing to frustrate users over a change of something that it’s not even broken and making it worse than before. Just read the whole thread of users complaining about the new layout and wanting the old layout back and the new layout not working on mobile devices. I feel that MyAnimeList is just hoarding it’s users, keeping the users hooked to the service and force changes despite the user complaints, but keep them from abandoning it.

It’s not all about Melative, but the new open source project Kronblr which will remove the barrier of the walled garden and allowing users to have a federated microblog without needing to sign up for a new account and also follow users on different domains.

If you have the desire to ditch MAL for Melative, just read my previous post on how to use Melative…It’s all there with a MAL Anime List to Melative Importer (a Importer for MAL Anime/Manga list functionality is included with Melative Library, a new project I’m working on.)

Will I be abandoning MAL Client OS X? No, but once the API ever gets done and/or the Unofficial MAL API gets fixed, I will do some work on it.

New MyAnimeList Style… Hell no!

Does this new style remind you of something? Yeah, the new Facebook.

This is annoying. The guy adds new stuff instead of fixing broken stuff. Makes me want to write my own MAL…
– FSX

This is something I didn’t realized when I woke up and after watching some anime, my MyAnimeList client broke for some reason… Well of course!

Earlier today, MyAnimeList, one of the popular Anime/Manga cataloging website looked different. I thought that this was a dream, but it wasn’t. I don’t care much about the new design, but I perfer the old design. This is bringing back memories of Facebook forcing it’s users to use the new layout, but the difference is that Facebook is more open to the developers… MAL on the other hand… well, it broke every MAL client out there since people are using it instead of the website, meaning less revenue from ads.

What the hell they are smoking? This is the main reason I actually HATE MAL… because they are not freaking open to the developers! WHY THE HELL UPDATE THE FREAKING LAYOUT WHEN YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE A FULLY IMPLEMENTED API FOR GOD SAKE! This is making developers life’s like myself even harder. Not to mention, the freaking API is so hard to use that it’s not even funny.

Suggestion, stop using MyAnimeList and go for the alternatives like AniDB or even Melative, which does Manga, Anime and even other media such as light/visual novels, dramas, etc. While I’m at it, I’m making a desktop client for it to make it even easier, so when I’m finished, there is no need to ever use MyAnimeList. Until whoever makes MyAnimeList cleans up their act and actually make a USABLE API for developers to use, they owe me 8 strawberry sundaes.

And yes, it’s an extension to the other rant I made about MAL and it’s APIs.

My Experiences of Anime Blogging in 2009

December 30, 2009 by Chikorita157 2 Comments

wpid-b44528a6fd17965a36b01c653ea7a5eb-300x225-2009-12-30-15-02.jpg
I have started to blog back in October of last year, mostly about topics not about anime. Suddenly, my interest for anime came back when I discovered better anime such as Suzumiya Haruhi, Lucky Star and soon after Kanon and also Clannad/Clannad After Story. This is when I started to blog about anime in middle of February while using the same Wordpress theme with alot of modifications and kept at it for close to 10-11 months with my effort to update my blog frequently with new Anime episodic posts, reviews and editorials.

Whole year went by so fast and I have published over 220 posts within the 10-11 months I have blogging. Basically, I have been posting on average 20 posts per month. Blogging has always been fun for me, although it’s time consuming. The idea is I want to share my thoughts instead of relying on Twitter like most anime bloggers and neglect their blogs. Yes I’m looking at you… and RyanA have been complaining about this frequently on IRC! I for one didn’t take this trend and decided that anime blogging should stay as it is… on your blog.

The most notable events I have written a response about is the eroge ban (which is wrong, btw), ADV shutdown, Bloggers not crediting their fanart and lastly, Otaku Elimination Game where we spread more controversy and of course, the Endless Eight outrage where most of the bloggers complained about Endless Eight endlessly… I enjoyed that… err… not really.

I have seen some good series this year. The second half of Clannad After Story which is a masterpiece in my books, K-ON!, a lighthearted slice of life comedy, half of Kobato and Seitokai no Ichizon along with already finished animes I haven’t watched like Kanon, Clannad, Air, some of Kannagi, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (first season), Suzumiya Haruhi S1, Lucky Star and five episodes of Hayate no Gotoku. I’m hoping that next year will bring out great anime again… and pretty much looking forwards for Angel Beats! and perhaps another season of K-ON!

Except Suzumiya Haruhi Second Season… that sh** sucked thanks to Endless Eight… Never forget that…

But for now, so along and we see each other in 2010!

Nagisa's My Girl!

Today is December 24th, which means it’s Furukawa Nagisa’s birthday… Happy Birthday Nagisa!

If you don’t know who is Nagisa, she is the main heroine in Clannad

While we on the topic of Christmas, I feel like reviewing some Anime’s with a Christmas Episodes…

wpid-nogizaka-haruka-ep4-christmas-300x168-2009-12-24-16-31.png
Haruka and Mka in a Santa outfit?

Well, Nogizaka Haruka had one, but filled with fanservice… Well, all Christmas Episodes always have fanservice… but this is over the top with Haruka dressed in a skimpy Santa outfit… which causes a moe nosebleed on Yuuto’s part and Gentou getting annoyed. Not to mention, they sang some Christmas karaoke.

wpid-clannad-christmas-1-300x168-2009-12-24-16-31.png
Time to blow out the candles!

Well, Clannad ~After Story~ had two christmas scenes… the one above and another one where…

wpid-clannad-christmas-2-300x168-2009-12-24-16-31.png
Nagisa becomes drunk and she acts like a clingy girl.

and of course… there is K-ON with…

wpid-kon-chirstmas-300x225-2009-12-24-16-31.png
Why this comes up in mind?

and also in preparation of the Christmas party, while Ui does all the cooking, Yui, the airhead starts making paper chains that wrapped around herself… wow…

Anyways… I hope you have a safe and happy Christmas where ever you are! I will resume blogging on December 26th… Have fun!

The Journey in Creating a MyAnimeList Client

December 17, 2009 by Chikorita157 8 Comments
Exhausting work, right?
Exhausting work, right?

MyAnimeList clients are at their infancy. Before the API came out, MAL Updater was your only choice and it only worked on Windows. The problem is that not everyone used Windows and used different OSes. MyAnimeList is a staple for most anime viewers and bloggers out there who use it to keep track what they are watching.

If you recall a few months ago, I have complained there was a lack of a MyAnimeList Client for Mac OS X. I haven’t checked hard enough and there was a program called iMAL that allows you to update MAL… The only problem is the program is very unstable and every time I tried to use it, it crashes on me… and I even recompile it and it’s even more unstable. Another alternative is AniChou, which is open sourced. The only problem there is the interface looks like crap (except in Liunx) and it was difficult to install since I have to install additional packages to make it work on Mac OS X. With that, MAL Updater has way too much features, the interface is cluttered and it’s closed sourced, which isn’t good. However, there was light at the end of the tunnel. Unofficial MAL API made this possible since the APIs are alot easier to use than the official API and they are planning to add Manga support right after they made some fixes to some search bugs…

After I complained about not being a really good MyAnimeList client for Mac OS X and discovering a easier API to use, I went to work and created this. I used RealBasic 2009 to create this client and wanted to make as close to a Mac experience as possible without having to learn Objective-C and Cocoa (and I don’t want to spend time trying to fix memory leaks). I was able to at least get the most basic features to work after three days of programming (you can check out some of the early screenshots I made of the program in early development). It took that long since RealBasic was a little different from Visual Basic .net and I haven’t worked on that stuff ever since I switched to a Mac in late 2006. Just within a week, I added status updating with 2.x and you could add new titles to the list, update them or even delete them for the list.

However, by the time I have used melative for my live micro-blogging when I go and watch some episodes of Anime… so guess what, I have decided to add melative support to MAL Client OS X since media is all about experience. MAL lacks the ability to express what you want to say about a episode you are watching. This reduces the need to update both melative and MAL separately, when you can do it the same time. If you have nothing to say when you go update, it will just sync the information you updated on MAL to your melative library.

The reason I didn’t add any additional features like auto-sorting of media files and skinning support since it’s unnecessary. Most people would use AnimeSuki, IRC, or even licensed retail discs anyways, so I don’t see the point of MAL Client OS X do the work since you have it done already. Skinning support is a niche feature, especially on Mac OS X and Linux. Rarely, you will see any skinned programs on those platforms and it’s too Windows-like and make things more complicated. MAL Client OS X is all about simplicity and not all about features. Having a lot of features in the world don’t make your program any better if the implementation sucks and not easy to use. This is the reason I created MAL Lite, a simple, lightweight, minimalist client for Windows and Linux as an alternative. Along with it, I made a GUI for MAL Updater OS X scripts so it will be a lot friendlier and people can scrobble their anime while they are watching it.

There is a reason I used RealBasic over Adobe AIR. For one, RealBasic can make native apps and uses less RAM as a result. Adobe Air, on the other hand is notorious for using a lot of RAM and is not native. Also, I can access the OS features with RealBasic and do a lot more than I could in AIR…

The future… Once manga support gets added, I will start working on adding it to the program. Hopefully, the program will hit the final stages with version 1.0, and by then, RealBasic 2010 will be out with Cocoa support…

What to expect in Key's new Anime Project, Angel Beats!

December 4, 2009 by Chikorita157 2 Comments

Having discovered the greener side of Anime and also Visual Novels of Key/VisualArts with my first encounter with Kanon remake by Kyoto Animation and soon after, the epicly long Bishoujo visual novel, Clannad, which was completely clean that I played for several hours (think of the Tetris Effect, I was so addicted to it.) Eventually, it led me to watch the whole Clannad Anime, no wonder I got hooked on them… The stories are beautiful with cute, beautiful girls filled with so much moe (more so with Kanon with all those verbal tics/catchphrases) and also great music that I keep coming back for more… That is pretty much why I played the original Kanon visual novel and finished Nayuki’s, Mai’s and Shiori’s arc within a few weeks or days in July… Not only that, but I picked up and started the Air anime, which I haven’t finished yet… I’m that dedicated.

As you remember a few months back, Key have announced a new project called Angel Beats! with the collaboration of Dengeki (if you don’t know, it’s a magazine mostly on Bishoujo games and related manga and light novel. Something that Ken will go crazy for.) Knowing their track record with Air, Kanon and Clannad, I have high expectations with this original work and it seems like it’s some parody anime since the main character oddly resembles Haruhi… but then again, it’s Key and they will probably slip in tearjerking moments underneath the comedy… which make us shred manly tears (or girly tears.)

What do we know so far… well, P.A.Works will be animating this. If you don’t know it by now, they recently made Canaan which was aired this summer and also True Tears, based off a visual novel… and Jun Maeda is back and character designs are being done by Na-Ga so you shouldn’t expect too much disappointed there. The question is, will they pull it off? Who knows… but I know one thing… It’s not going to be a total disaster like Endless Eight and Suzumiya Haruhi Second Season… now thinking about it gives me second thoughts about Haruhi’s future… Then again, Angel Beats may as well end up as being another Little Busters since that had fighting scenes, right?

Meantime, you can learn more about it at ASuki if you feel like getting the latest information. Anime releases next year in Spring 2010 and have 13 episodes. Can’t wait… and I seriously hope there is no Hirano Aya in it.

Otaku Elimination Game does show what’s wrong with the Anime Blogosphere

December 1, 2009 by Chikorita157

After the overwhelming response I had with the previous editorial I wrote on how the Anime Blogosphere is filled with posts that are not even closely related to Anime and filled with boring rehash of mostly news and photoshots of figurines, no wonder AnimeNano are filled with not so interesting or good quality posts. I decided to write a second part of the editorial… How OEG shows what’s wrong with the Anime Blogosphere.

When the Otaku Elimination Game post it’s first review of select blogs, people have shun it outright for being a troll blog, but they do bring a point…. Anime blogs are becoming less about Anime and more about pointless stuff like random Japan news, photo shots of figurines and how much RAM you use on your computer, etc… It eeems that these days, Anime Blogs are becoming way too personal and people are beginning to post personal experiences too much compared to the ratio of actual anime/manga reviews and anime/manga related editorials and commentaries. Sure it’s okay to add your own thoughts to news, but the problem is that news even though you add thoughts to your news can outrun your anime content.

The problem is that the Anime Blogosphere is filled with alot of not so good blogs, believe it or not… Sturgeon’s Law is alive… and 90% of the blogs you see on AnimeNano and in the Anime Blogosphere is crud … and most of these blogs die after a few months and never become active again… The problem is that fansubs have gotten so easy to obtain that bloggers want in and we see more quantity over quality. We seem to forgot that years ago when Anime Blogs are less about what it is today and more like spoilers… The problem is that people seem to not put enough effort in their Anime Blogs, which can we see from the overwhelming majority of not so good blogs on Wordpress.com, and most of these bloggers complain they don’t have enough time and end up not updating. We see way too many copycats of successful anime blogs like That Anime Blog, Random Curiosity, or even Danny Choo that Anime Blogs seem to have no uniqueness, which the OEG seems to be stressing greatly… Bloggers should be more creative and make their blogs more unique… perhaps making your own format and even doing something more creative… Innovation isn’t the problem, but quality of content and the number of copycat blogs out there…

Lastly, AnimeNano seems to be less about Anime and Manga, but more on pointless and uninteresting things about Japan and Anime/Manga/Visual Novel/Light Novel unrelated stuff. As pointed out, AnimeNano atleast doesn’t have Sankaku, but it still doesn’t make it any better because there is still blogs like Sankaku out there that doesn’t even talk about the stuff I mentioned… Anime Nano seriously need some kind of feature that allow you to flag that kind of content so that it won’t pollute AnimeNano… (No offense to anyone who operate that type of blog) or a better way, have a option to view Anime/Manga/Visual Novel/etc related stuff in one feed and another feed with Japan stuff, video games, etc.

The OEG should make people want to improve their blogs, not go in the corner and fear about their blogs being attacked and not doing something about it… Also, Bloggers should blog more, emphasizing on quality posts and make their blogs more unique from other blogs.

Note: I’m not against any kind of censorship whatsoever. I’m hoping I’m not beating a dead horse over this… but this will be the last post on this matter.

Editorial: What ever happen to innovation in the AniBlogosphere?

November 30, 2009 by Chikorita157 17 Comments
My view of the Anime Blogosphere in General...
My view of the Anime Blogosphere in General...

The OEG attempted to jumpstart the half-dead blogosphere, but it seems to only cause people to question them or even outright show themselves as internet trolls by other bloggers and one blogger did their work for them already. The problem is that the Aniblogosphere in my view is alot less on Anime and Manga or anything exciting and more about just news on Japan, which we can get from ANN or even Danny Choo. We don’t need the same post on Final Fantasy XIII elixir… It’s already covered nor we need to know about random Japanese news or happenings… It’s been done by so many blogs that it’s not funny anymore… just look at the few posts I found on AnimeNano…

The same, old... news. Nothing interesting about it.
The same... old... news. There's nothing interesting about it.

Posting news is pretty generic and not exciting in my opinion nor it will help solve the ever troubling problem of the half-dead Anime Blogosphere. Bloggers should not only review Anime, Manga or even anything related to it, they should drive innovation and do something that haven’t done like a project or something that will interests the readers such as sharing your thoughts about other things like visual novels or making commentaries on characters or anime you have interest in or do something creative besides posting news… That’s Anime News Network’s job, not yours. I highly doubt you will get a lot of viewers that way… It’s not wrong or anything, but bloggers should tone it down a bit and start doing something innovative besides copying like Microsoft copying ideas from Mac OS X and KDE/Linux/whatever for example. That way, bloggers can be more happier that the Anime Blogosphere isn’t half-dead anymore.

Remember, it’s you that can reignite the Anime Blogosphere by innovating… It’s not my job to push you to innovate, it’s yours. Otherwise, it will stay like that if nothing is done and most wouldn’t like a half-dead Anime Blogosphere, would you?

Editorial: Sad state of MyAnimeList and it's APIs

November 17, 2009 by Chikorita157 6 Comments

MyAnimeList is probably the most used site by most anime viewers and bloggers besides AniDB, melative, or Anime Planet to log all the watched anime and also manga, although not everyone read manga compared to Anime. However, I feel that MyAnimeList just like Facebook is cluttered and have too much going on and you have to log in just to update your list and most of the time, you forget to update that list. This is why there are programs like MAL Updater on Windows and MAL Client OS X on Mac OS X with a small number of other MAL Clients. However, MAL is not making it easy with developers to create these programs and I already have some trouble trying to figure out how to implement it.

The problem is that the MAL API is very incomplete. There is no documentation on how to obtain the list or even get the information of the Anime using the APIs. sliceoflifer made the Unofficial MAL API , which is the supposed replacement of the MAL API and also makes life easier since all the functions are there and you can easily implement the API. The problem is, there is no Manga support. With the Official MAL API, there is a severe lack of information on how to use the API and the lack of JSON support. Also, it’s buggy since in some instances, searching for titles like Kampfer does not even pop up any results due to the bad data spit out by the official MAL API.

MyAnimeList in my opinion is becoming too big and the developer APIs are left neglected for months and left to rot. MAL Updater is a closed sourced program and there is no native open source solution (No, AniChou does not count as native alternative) that would work natively on Windows or even a full Mac solution. The developer of MAL Updater have to resort largely with HTML scraping which is a pain in the neck to figure out and I commend him on his effort to do so… Why should developers be left having to do this time consuming process of making code to get rid of the HTML tags and convert it to XML? Does MAL want developers make more programs that would work with MAL and instant updating instead of resorting to the near-monopoly MAL Updater…

Another gripe is that their site is STILL not iPhone friendly or perhaps smartphone friendly… Most sites these days have iPhone versions of the website since the iPhone grew in popularity due to it’s powerful browser. iPhone friendly MAL would help since if some people watch anime on the TV and don’t have their laptop on or want to go to a computer just to update their status, they can do it easily on the iPhone. Why not jump on a iPhone solution for MAL, either a iPhone App or a iPhone friendly website… It shouldn’t be terribly hard to do since popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter already have one with their own iPhone apps.

Hopefully you take these suggestions seriously and help make MAL better, or I have to resort more with melative since it’s works alot better… (and why not join in on the fun).

Editorial: Otaku Elimination, or Anime Blog Bashing?

November 8, 2009 by Chikorita157 9 Comments
wpid-eliminationgame-2009-11-8-14-43.jpg
Time for the Otaku Elimination Game... It's more like bash the Anime Bloggers.

What I didn’t know is that there is a game out there called the “Otaku Elimination Game” which someone check on the blog and criticizes on them. Looks good on paper, but the problem is the game is in my view is a personal attack on the bloggers than just giving constructive criticism so that people can improve on their anime blogs. After reading the first post, it’s more like X can’t microblog or y is a sheep because he uses a Mac and a iPhone or z liking the run-of-the -mill anime and characters.

Come on, get real… Personal attacks don’t solve anything or improve anything… It could be the same to internet trolling, let’s throw personal attacks because someone don’t necessarily agree with you… Not to mention, it’s very unprofessional to go on and attack someone personally because their blog have flaws or it’s something you don’t like… It went so far that Seinime at his blog took matters in his own hand and parodied the Otaku Elimination Game post…

If you really want constructive criticism, you should ask someone to look at your blog and have them make suggestions instead of participating in this pointless attack dog of a game… It’s no better than political candidates mudslinging each other with negative campaigning.

Update: It seems that they wrote a reply to this madness, but I still think they are wasting their time with their faux rage and insults instead of giving constructive criticism… Again, don’t feed their trolls, and they will eventually give up and go get a life. No point in wasting your time reading about them when they don’t know what the hell is a Otaku is or lists specifics what a Otaku should be.

You know that people would only take your so called “faux rage” or harsh criticism as an attack and they won’t probably care or give a crap what you say. Criticism is only helpful when it’s constructive and not harsh, so it can be more helpful and the person that give the criticism won’t look like a complete a-hole. That what I got to say about the whole Otaku Elimination thing, it’s completely stupid and a waste of time raging over. =p

Editorial: Male Leads – Why I don't like idiots like Shutto.

November 4, 2009 by Chikorita157 6 Comments

Note: This Editorial primarily focuses on Romance and Harem animes in general.

The gripes of most harem anime is that most of the harems come with male leads that the viewer most likely hate. They are either losers, jerks or even perverts. The prime example of the unideal male lead is Makoto from School Days (which everyone seems to want him dead, which in the end he does in the last episode) or even Keitaro from Love Hina for being a pervert and a loser. Male leads like this makes me cringe and want me to stay away from harem anime.

With the viewing of Shutto Sutherland, the jerkass (and abides to the Screw the rules, I have money!) that was introduced in Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (first season) episode 11 and again in episode 5 of Purezza when he gets angry at Alice-chan and decides to bully her… Great god, there is a reason why I don’t like these types of male leads in harem anime. They seem to make you angry inside and want you to punch them for the horrible things they do. These type of leads make your blood boil and want to take a chainsaw out… Well… that what is the feeling I had when he was bulling her and also pouring grape wine on top of Yuuto’s head.

MyAnimeList Updater… Why no Mac OS X Client? and the Alternative.

I watch anime on my free time and I am often too lazy to log in to MyAnimeList and go through the hoops just to update what episode I’m watching. Like with Twitter, I want to instantly update my stuff through a client without needing to open up the web browser and log into MAL just to do that. There is actually a program like this called “MAL Updater”, but only for Windows…. That means that users that uses Mac OS X or Linux are SOL, unless you run it in Virtual Machine, but why would you want to do that since it takes resources just to run Windows….

Sure there are command line clients for Mac OS X and Linux, but they are no means user friendly for inexperienced users nor they are easy to use or feature rich as the Windows version. I’m complaining because why should users be shut into a Microsoft monopoly when the purpose of using Mac OS X and Linux is to get away from the Microsoft monopoly… but there is a alternative to all this MAL Updater madness… Melative (a combination of media and Twitter)… I have been using it for a few months now thanks to one blogger that does the same purpose and I have been helping with the development of melativemicro, a client that works on Macs, Windows and Linux. Besides, I don’t even use the social aspect of MAL anyways…

If Melative can have a cross platform client, how come MAL Updater can’t have a crossplatform client that have the same features to work on Macs and Linux instead of being stuck with command line crap that is hard to use and control and the Windows version only be locked into Microsoft? There are cross platform tools like Qt4, Mono, Realbasic, etc out there, so there is absolutely no excuse to make a client with the same feature set for all the OS. Until they make a full featured MAL Updater for Mac, I’m sticking mostly to Melative until that happens.

Update: In response to no MAL Updater on Mac, I decided to take the blue pill and build my own MAL Client for Mac OS X. If you want to track my progress or help out, join the club.

Nagisa, why she is the ideal girl, which screams moé! – Part 2

Nagisa during the progression in Clannad have overcome her challenges of reviving the Drama club and also made new friends, but unfortunately, she got sick again, which caused her not to graduate with Tomoya. In After Story, we will touch more on the path with her eventually marrying Tomoya and deciding on giving birth to a child.

During the course of After Story, the relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa develops further. Towards the end of summer, Nagisa became sick, which resulted in being held back for another year. While Tomoya wanted to stay back a year, it would be foolish to do so anyways.

During the next school year, Tomoya moves into a apartment and start working while Nagisa finishes her school year. Although she couldn’t get the Drama club up again, she still seem to survive the whole school year with friends from the music club. Nagisa during that period help make food for Tomoya, which proves that she still seems to care about him alot, especially about her being concerned about his left shoulder.

Although Tomoya didn’t make it to Founder’s Day due to his mistake, she didn’t mind anyways…

Another instance with her caring about him alot is the night after asking about the swimsuit, Tomoya was avoiding the question about his father and insists on meeting him one day. When Tomoya was about to get a promotion, it was cut off by his father’s actions which made Tomoya deciding to move away from the city, which Nagisa doesn’t want since she seems to like the city and wants to make him happy living in the same city instead of running away from his problems. In meeting his father at the jail, Tomoya starts getting angry at him and walks away. With him angry, Nagisa chases after Tomoya before he punches right hand to a wall, but couldn’t stop it and injured his hand. Nagisa having seen what he done, gets him to stop. In this scene, Tomoya gets engaged with Nagisa so that they will become strong.

After marriage that happened after Nagisa graduated, she takes a job at a nearby restaurant that opened. After saving her, the manager reveals that she is a hard worker. In contrast with Shiori, although she is weak, she still managed to survive to have fun with Yuuichi and also attend a whole week of school.

Oh noes! I bet the moe levels are very high!

And yes, the famous scene and she did the impossible…

wpid-Nagisa-2-scr2-300x168-2009-10-3-23-55.jpg
Sorry, no hentai scenes in Clannad.. It wouldn't matter anyways

In her decision of wanting to have the baby, she seems to want a home delivery, although it’s not safe due to her conditions. The decision to have it at home is not only because she wanted to see and hold the baby after it was born, but throughout the course of her relationship of Tomoya, she have grew stronger as a person… but the only problem is that the changes of the city causes her to become more ill since all things can’t stay the same forever. Even though she is strong, the illness caused by the city changing so rapidly caused her tragic death which caused everyone to be crushed with devastation the fact that Nagisa herself through the course of After Story to become stronger, but unable to because of the bad luck. This is why most people can sympathize with her (maybe more so with the visual novel than the anime). Although she have overcome the hardest challenges and become strong with the help of Tomoya and his friends, she was unable to survive, until Tomoya collects the light orbs to help save Nagisa and also Ushio from the horrible fate. In comparison with Shiori and Misuzu, there is a reason why we can also sympathize with both. Shiori in a sense that she is rejected by her sister and had her relationship with her sister and being strong until her birthday. Misuzu is that she is a sweet and innocent girl, which is unfortunately stuck with a curse and dies in her aunt’s lap on the beach which made many people’s hearts crushed with a bucket of tears and she was given no chance to live, unlike Shiori and Nagisa although she was offered a reincarnation along with Yukito.

Next Post, I will conclude why Nagisa is the ideal girl and sum up both parts with the full argument.

Nagisa, why she is the ideal girl, which screams moé! – Part I

September 24, 2009 by Chikorita157 3 Comments

wpid-73d24869de217276253853814c6c8b19-300x225-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg

After seeing a post about wifes and anime girls and watching the CLANNAD movie, it made me think about something about Nagisa and CLANNAD. In the previous two posts made a few months back that I mentioned about moe although I never really talk about moe or the so called moe competitions out there, but it’s quite evident I really like, Misuzu and Shiori. There is one character I   haven’t touch that have both personalities of these girls I mentioned… Nagisa Furukawa.

Nagisa is the combination of Shiori and Misuzu in my opinion. Misuzu because the fact she is a shy girl and doesn’t have any friends because in the case with Nagisa, her friends have long been graduated and she is innocent. Then, why Shiori have anything to do with Nagisa? Shiori in the sense that Nagisa have a similar sickness, but her determination and unwilling to give up. Also, they both have a interest in drama since Shiori mainly watches drama while she was at home and Nagisa have a interest in drama with her determination of wanting to revive the Drama Club. Another thing with Nagisa and Shiori is that they are ordinary and wear plain clothing. If you notice the clothing that Nagisa and Shiori wears, you know why.

Nagisa is like Shiori and Misuzu in a sense… We take them for granted until they are gone. (in Nagisa’s case, in Clannad After Story Episode 16 until she returns in Episode 22).

wpid-nagisa-scr-1-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.png
Where they first met

Nagisa starts out in the beginning of the show as a shy girl and unable to walked the hill since her friends have graduated and she no longer have the courage to walk up the hill. With the help of Tomoya, she was able to walk up the hill on the first day of school.

wpid-nagisa-scr-2-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Like with Misuzu, Nagisa seems to be alone...

Sadly, her illness causes her to get held back in her last year of high school and caused her loneliness. In today society, we rarely see that, except with quiet and shy people.

wpid-nagisa-scr3-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Unfortunately, a year too late... poor Nagisa...

Nagisa seems to show her determination to try and revive the club although the club seems to shut down when she opens the door with shaky hands and being melancholic after seeing the packed boxes, but she doesn’t give up. Next day, she makes a poster:

wpid-nagisa-scr-3-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Nagisa loves dango. The Toei version of the poster seems more colorful..

Like with Shiori with her obsession with ice cream and Misuzu with her “extra thick peach nectar,” Nagisa continues the tradition with Dango because they are cute although not as popular as it was used to. Big Dango Family resembles a cheerful and happy world where people and famlies get along and flourish. This is important later on since CLANNAD is about families after all… and Nagisa starts one with Tomoya later on, but at a expense (which will be talked about next part). Also, the poster seems to bring out Nagisa’s personality, as her being innocent.

wpid-nagisa-scr-4-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
As with Shiori, Nagisa still waits for Tomoya outside in the rain without a umbrella.

Nagisa wanting to see Tomoya to play basketball waits in the rain, which in contrast is sorta the same thing with Shiori, which disobeys the doctors order just to see Yuuichi after school. Nagisa realizing that Tomoya can’t shoot and apologizes since she know that she was wrong and faints because of her illness.

Later on, Nagisa makes friends with Fujibashi twins, Kotomi and Fuuko and starts to warm up instead of being shy and lonely.

wpid-nagisa-scr12-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Okazaki-san is my boyfriend... Whaaa?!

Another trait that Nagisa seems to have is she is naive. For instance, Tomoya grabs Nagisa and runs away from Sunahora. She protects Tomoya from Sunahora since she thinks he is trying to make Tomoya gay and admits that she is Tomoya’s boyfriend, which caused Sunahora run like a nut job. Although she doesn’t mean it, she eventually start having a relationship with Tomoya since the two seems to have a lot in common and that they both care about each other.

wpid-nagisa-scr-5-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
No! You not letting your finger on my Nagisa!

Tomoya reacting to someone who wants to help Nagisa after she fell and hurt her leg in Episode 16 of Clannad… Now there evidence that Tomoya does love Nagisa romantically. In the visual novel, the relationship starts right after Tomoya embraces Nagisa after the Nagisa gives up on the Drama Club since she want the choir club to keep their advisor.

wpid-nagisa-scr-6-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Nagisa's is mad... ohhhh...

With the growing of Nagisa’s relationship with Tomoya, she seems to care for him a lot more before she met him, even after she performs her play, she still cares about Tomoya and doesn’t want him to do anything wrong. For instance, with the PA calling for Tomoya and him running away, she chases after him and drags him back by pulling his arm. This proves that Nagisa, although she is ill is caring and also very determined, which is not the case with Shiori and Misuzu (they do care, but not the same as with Nagisa and Tomoya.). The way how she try to revive the Drama Club with the help of Tomoya, Sunohara and friends and her performance on stage shows her determination of achieving her goal.

wpid-nagisa-scr-7-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpgwpid-nagisa-scr-8-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg

However, her dreams of performing stage drama came at a price since Sanae and Akio have to give up their dreams to take care of Nagisa, which caused herself to become melancholic and also caused her to suddenly cry on stage after the curtains were lifted up after being reminded of Akio’s dreams of performing theater after watching a video of him performing before her performance. With the encouragement from Akio and Sanae, she was able to break from her depression and able to achieve her dreams that her parents have sacrificed.

After sweeping away her tears, she starts to perform her play, which is flawless… both in the Anime and TV show:

wpid-nagisa-scr-9-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Wait, the costume Nagisa is wearing looks vastly similar to the Uniforms in Kanon...
wpid-nagisa-scr-10-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
Toei seems to glorify Nagisa with her wedding dress... Moe Moe Kyun?

Like with both the TV series and the movie, Tomoya officially confesses his love for Nagisa, which have been evident across the whole season (and also the Nagisa arc in the Visual Novel). Tomoya and Nagisa seems to be the dream couple… most say… but I still prefer Tomoya and Kyou… *runs*

Next time, we will discuss why she is the ideal girl in the 2nd part of the story, After Story.

wpid-nagisa-scr11-300x168-2009-09-24-22-14.jpg
So happy together.

The Harsh Reality of College and Anime Blogging

September 14, 2009 by Chikorita157 11 Comments
Unyuuuuu~
Unyuuuuu~

We all wish that we are in a city where wishes come true and be part of a drama club with a girl drawing pictures of Dango or help a harem of sad girls in snow… The problem is… reality. The majority of us Anime bloggers attend high school or college and school isn’t as fun like in the Anime universe or visual novels.

I’m going onto the third week at attending Rutgers University (yes, I know theres a Anime club there, but I won’t bother since there will probably be a bunch of Weeaboos that will annoy me since I’m a actual Asian) and like with Spring semester at my old college I used to attend, I’m in a pile of homework, readings and papers to write. Unlike spring semester, I am practically going to school almost the whole week although three days I only have one class and I don’t really have that insanely difficult classes that require alot of time. Still, homework takes a lot of free time I could spend on watching anime and writing a blog post about it. With the Prelab for General Chemistry Lab, it took me nearly 6-7 hours just to complete it… Same with my accounting homework since I have problems to work out which takes a while since I need to learn how to solve it. With the other courses, mostly it’s reading and writing papers which won’t take as long, but I won’t be updating nearly as much I did in the summer since I need to complete my homework ahead of time so I can have time to update my blog later… Remember, work and study now and play later… and you will get good grades.

I do anime blogging and watching on my free time and I do my best to make updates since I’m not one of those people who does hiatus and never updates the blog again… If you excuse me, I have some homework to do.

But my feelings still wish it was still summer, but not a eternal summer of course… I hate that Endless Eight loops…

Editorial: Haruhi and Moral Issues, Does Haruhi deserves to be punched?

September 8, 2009 by Chikorita157 3 Comments
It's serious business that we need Meganekko Tomoyo.
It's so serious that we need Meganekko Tomoyo.

Haruhi and her rather egoistic and her cruel personality have resonated through out the first episode of Sighs to the recently aired episode when Kyon finally flips out at Haruhi. The problem is that lead up with some people ending up hating Haruhi since she have become a complete b**ch. This was also the case with the light novel which actually showed more of her being a complete b**ch. If Haruhi acted like that in real life, most people would just ignore her as a complete ***hole.

The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi finally shows Haruhi’s true colors that she has no morals nor values her friendship. Maybe because she is a goddess, but in real life, if you were to act like a complete jerk to your friends most of the time, you would probably lose most of your friends. The reason Haruhi is not my favorite character although she is funny sometimes is that she always take advantage of her friends (especially Mikuru the most, although sometimes funny) and also doing despicable acts that in real life would have big moral issues (like throwing a person into a pond, forcing someone to change into a different clothing against his/her desire, spiking Mikuru’s drink with tequila and also Haruhi smacking Mikuru which is a big no-no because “contact lens is supposed to fly out when your head gets smacked which is stupid… If this was real life and Haruhi indeed did this, there would have been moral consequences that would involve with it (such as assault, slipping alcohol in someone’s drink, potential loss of friendship, injury, etc.). Although Haruhi thinks that Mikuru is a toy, there are also moral issues by using a human being as a toy because seriously, humans aren’t meant to be used as a toy you can fool around with since they have feelings, which apparently, Haruhi completely disregards which makes Kyon angry. Haruhi have no right to treat Mikuru as a toy and smack her around as much she wants because you know, hitting a innocent girl is a wrong thing to do.

Should Haruhi deserved to be punched for being an immoral, cruel ***hole by Kyon, even if hitting girls is wrong? I believe so because even if it causes dire consequences such as the world ending, it would have teach her a important lesson, threat others as you would threat you and also stop acting like a complete jerk and respect her friends. If Kyon just let Haruhi continuing being a jerk, she would eventually stay a complete ***hole as Kyon says it and eventually everyone would ultimately avoid her. Too bad Itsuki stopped him before Kyon was able to punch Haruhi in the face.

After watching the forth episode of Sighs, it made me appreciate Kyon and the other members of the SOS Brigade. Believe me, it took a lot of courage for Kyon to ultimately flip out since he knew the consequences of the world ending if he successfully hits Haruhi in the face. The Sighs arc, despite Haruhi having a energetic, non-***hole side of her personality made me hate her as a character completely because she have a lot of flaws of being a immoral, cruel, cold ***hole as presented in the actions she did in the forth episode of Sighs. While some people may disagree with me, Haruhi is a flawed character, although she is a unique one because of her mostly dominant cruel side of her that turns me off completely… Despite that, she is a enjoyable character when she is not acting as a complete ***hole that everyone wants to avoid and hate as demonstrated in Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi, but I still have stronger preferences for other characters though.

Hopefully, Haruhi finally gets out of being a complete jerk when she finally recorded the whole movie… or maybe not…

Bandai Entertainment does not care about the fans, delays Sola again

September 6, 2009 by Chikorita157 Leave a Comment
My reaction to the forth delay... Depressed...
My reaction to the forth delay... Depressed...

After looking through the rightstuf orders again, Bandai Entertainment yet again delays sola again for another 23 days. Now it’s being released on September 29, 2009… That’s great since I have absolutely a lack of anime to watch in Fall 2009 since none of them interests me and there is no Key Adaptation… What am I supposed to do, bang my head on the wall several times and make sure it’s not a dream?

Evidence that sola is yet again delayed...
Evidence that sola is yet again delayed...

Unfortunately, it’s not a dream and I’m really angry on how Bandai Entertainment is handling the release, which is so ADV Films like… What R1 Licensors should learn from ADV Film’s shutdown is not to excessively delay the releases of the anime series or you may get loyally paying fans angry or even complain about it on the blog. I know Bandai Entertainment is far from becoming another ADV Films, but this continual mistake that ADV Films made so many time is just damaging their credibility. How simple is it to just translate, add the subtitles, press the DVDs and package them. The way they are handling it, they are having a hard time…

Until they ever release it, I’m never buying any more releases from Bandai Entertainment, except the ones I have already preorder anyways… If you actually read this, I want a formal apology once you release it to the fans for screwing with the fans so many times…

To people who want to buy these series: If Bandai Ent. never materialize these releases, I suggest complaining via written letter. The address is:

Commentary: Downfall of ADV Films… What caused it?

September 4, 2009 by Chikorita157 12 Comments
Nooo! My Strawberry Jamu!
Nooo! My Strawberry Jamu!

This Monday, ADV Films, a licensor of region 1 Anime announced that it would shut it’s doors for good and transfer assets to other companies. The announcement cause many people to be surprised and caught off guard. However this was expected because ADV Films for the past few years made several fatal mistakes that lead to the shutdown of ADV films.

So, what lead to ADV Films ultimately folding?

ADV Films was once a strong licensor and looked highly towards with the many successes with the dubbing aspect, but several mistakes they make caused them to ultimately cause them and their reputation to weaken in 2008 and ultimately crashing in 2009. The recession that worsen in late 2008 didn’t help either and made things a lot worse.

Ever since 2008, ADV had a bad year, ending up having to shut down the UK devision, suspending the Anime ADVocates program, ended the relationship with Sojitz (which may be the cause of not having enough funding, thus calling it the ADV Meltdown), and ultimately transferring 30 titles to Funimation since they aren’t able to continue distributing it.

On top of that, in early 2009, ADV flops again and said that Clannad won’t have a Dub which caused people to go in a frenzy and cause the reputation of ADV to go down even further, after they screwed up in 2008 with distribution of Anime availability. Lucky for them, Clannad actually sold better than expected despite fan reaction to no dub, but still didn’t stop the inevitable…

The problem with ADV is that a combination of mismanagement of their part and unable to meet the fan’s demands and giving them accurate information, it too contributed to ADV Films ultimately shutting down.

What mistakes have ADV done?

1. Not listening and informing the fans.
Besides from the negative reaction towards ADV for not providing a dub for Clannad, they never have a good system of informing the fans or even have any good communication by email. Another thing is that their website is hardly updated so fans could get accurate information.

Not to mention, ADV films for what I remembered never had a blog, unlike others. Funimation and Bandai Entertainment have one, so why not ADV? Perhaps they are too lazy.

2. Not providing accurate information
ADV is infamous of this for awhile. They pull the titles before they put the information back and also never give information about the schedule releases (going back with #1).

3. Decisions and Anime on DVD.
ADV seems to depend on listening users on Anime on DVD (now Mania.com) according to Zac Bertchsy, which is the worse possible way of deciding on what series to license/produce. (maybe too exaggerated, but they shouldn’t have depended on AoD too much)

4. Poor distribution and supply of DVDs and delays.
ADV also made this mistake… a lot. and they usually delayed various series with no explanation which was common in 2008 (aka ADV’s bad year). These delays, however cause negative reaction to fans, for example this post from the blog post of GAR GAR Stegosaurus… Great way to screw loyally paying customers.

5. Licensing more than they can handle.
ADV always seems to go and license a large amount of series and end up failing on a number of them. Instead of licensing a few of them and give them a quality release, they most likely do a wing job and just put it out in the market as fast as they can, which usually cause mistakes. This is also what contributed to their big downfall.

6. Depending way too much on Neon Genesis Evangelion…
and also ADV’s desire to make a Evangelion live action movie surely cooked up a disaster, which resulted in a big loss of money. You can only go so far with Evangelion…

7. ADV’s Mismanagement and Bad Business Plan.
If you have take a course in business, you know that the Business Plan. It’s what makes up your business and how will it operate. ADV took too many risky plans which resulted in a loss of money. Mismanagement on ADV’s part did not help either since they can’t seem to get the company on track and come up with a project that will be actually be successful.

What can Section23 Films learn from ADV’s mistakes?

Now since Section23 Films ultimately own all the companies that owned ADV’s assets, they need to learn from ADV’s mistakes and learn from them. They need to listen to the fans (through means of email, phone or even Twitter) and give accurate information instead of removing the listings and adding them again. Another thing is that they shouldn’t really take the suggestions from AnimeonDVD aka mania.com and figure out what would fans want instead of having a large number of failed projects. They also need to provide a well designed and regularly updated website with the latest information and also keep a blog on what they are doing. Lastly, they need to take their time on making a quality release instead of acquiring a lot of licenses and not being able to make a quality release.

Like always, Bandai Entertainment yet again delay the release of sola again.

August 8, 2009 by Chikorita157 1 Comment

kyou
Yes, this is facepalm worthy, but yet again, Bandai Entertainment yet again delayed sola another month, which now releases on September 15, 2009 from the orginally posted date, August 18, 2009 (found out on rightstuf. Is Bandai Entertainment pulling another ADV since they have delayed prerelease due to financial trouble? I’m 100% positive that Bandai Entertainment is not in any financial trouble in contrast of ADV which is was due to a big fiasco. Reguardless, Bandai Entertainment should have released sola by now.

Was it necessary to delay the release another month? How hard is it to just subtitle the whole series, author them onto DVDs, press the DVDs and package them? As mentioned in a few posts back almost about a week ago, I was asking, what is going on here? This latest delay make me ask the same questions over again, when it will ever come out? At the rate they going, sola will never materialize which is sad because I’m interested in watching that show and there isn’t really that much to see in the Fall season because it’s so lackluster… so, if they delay or cancel it one more time, I’m canceling my order completely along with my second volume of Kannagi as a punishment and they won’t get any more money until they formally apologizes for the delays.

To people who want to buy these series: If Bandai Ent. never materialize these releases, I suggest complaining via written letter. The address is:

What is a Harem Anime anyways?

August 2, 2009 by Chikorita157 3 Comments

I have been wondering… Why Kanon and Clannad or the like is labeled as a harem anime? Is it because it have a group of girls and only a minimal amount of male characters? It surprises me that in the game, you are only allowed to fall in love with one girl depending on what flags you have choose in the game…

For example, when I was playing Shiori’s arc in Kanon, the game does not give me another option to go on a date with another girl nor the choices I choose will allow that since the girlfriend is willngfully chosen depending on the flags you chose. Games like these are more on the melodrama/drama/one sided romance/slice of life opposed to a harem where you can date more than one girl. multiple dates and not having a definite girlfriend is key here. If the male lead willingfully chose his girlfriend, all bets are off and it isn’t considered a harem by definition.

The dictionary definition states for Harem:

Harem (noun) the wives (or concubines) of a polygamous man.
a group of female animals sharing a single mate.

This definition pretty much fits the classical definition of Harem (suggested reading on more about Harem from Baka-Raptor). Harem shows under the definition would be more like Shuffle!, Love Hina or Da Capo where the male lead dates more than one girl… When people consider Kanon a harem, just remind them the simultaneity requirement which is important in harem animes.

Editorial: How to screw up a licensed anime release.

July 31, 2009 by Chikorita157 2 Comments

Everyone might be wondering, what ever happen to the True Tears and sola anime releases? Originally Bandai Ent., the licensor of both anime series licensed both series early 2008 with selling volumes that are singles which are expensive without a dub… until they scrap it and instead decide to make it a full box set mid/late summer of last year. Ever since, the release date kept getting delayed and never face a release. Recently, True Tears supposed to release on July 21st, which is this month, but yet pushed back to August 18, 2009, the same date sola boxset supposed to be release.

What is going on here? I know the economy is not in the greatest shape, but it’s gradually improving, Bandi Ent., this is no excuse to keep delaying the release on end so people expect that it would never materialize… You already messed up the Lucky Star OVA release without a dub when it’s a very popular series… Next you are going to disappoint us on August 18 by delaying the release of both anime series again by another month? I am posting this because I am interested in watching sola and want to buy the DVDs, but keep messing with the release dates… If it gets delayed or even canceled, people are going to go into a RAGE somewhat like we have experienced with Endless Eight. There is absolutely NO EXCUSES why it shouldn’t release on August 18, 2009… but I am going to be very upset if it gets delayed or even canceled…

To people who want to buy these series: If Bandai Ent. never materialize these releases, I suggest complaining via written letter. The address is:
5551 Katella Ave
Cypress, CA, USA ,90630
By Email: support@bandai-ent.com
or mention them on Twitter with @bandaient

Also, I suggest boycotting any of their releases if they don’t release them. Delaying it 2 times is more than enough… This will probably be enough to have them listen.

Sub-Only Releases? Is this the future of the licensed anime releases?

July 28, 2009 by Chikorita157

Although I’m not a big fan of subs because they disappear while I’m reading it and having to go back, I will prefer watching the dub just to get the story and rewatch it the second time with the Japanese voice… but most of that is mostly gone which is sad because the economic downturn which is expected for us to get out towards the end of the year causing licensors to hold back dub releases and just release sub releases.

Unless I’m currently watching a series like Kannagi which I only watched 5 episodes and they licensed it for a sub-only release, thats the only circumstance I will buy the discs because I believe that studios who make the anime should deserve kind of credit… but for something I watched already and only comes out with a sub-only release, I am less inclined to buy the release because there is no added value.

While I’m still waiting forever for ADV to ever release a Clannad dub, I might not ever see it even after a few years and I’m still angry about them changing their decision about the dub release and still waiting up to this day to release a dub and sub release so I can support my favorite anime and buy it even if it cost a little more. The problem is, sub-only releases makes it difficult to recommend a series like Clannad which is very good to someone who haven’t watched anime before. I have nothing against any dubs and I have a open-minded approach, but I still think that series like this should deserve a dub so that other people can enjoy it without the frustration of having to rewind to the subtitle they missed and get what the character is saying. I know there is a economic downturn, but once the economy recovers, they should think about the fans and do what the fans want so that they can pull in more profit… For the meantime… I will be waiting for those dubs until pigs fly.
