Now that Mahiru has an offer from Kano’s mother, it brings back the past that Kano doesn’t want to discuss. However, Kano doesn’t want to reveal what went on with her mother during that time.
After Kano and her friends pulled off a successful first-anniversary performance, JELEE finally has 100K followers. However, there is some significance to why Kano wants that many, but it will become apparent soon. Now, she can relax as they eventually take her time preparing the New Year video that she promises to Yoru.
Of course, Mahiru talked about the offer Hayakawa Yukine, who is Kano’s mother, made to Kiui. Mahiru knows it’s out of her league, but she feels conflicted as she wants to challenge herself. However, Kano’s relationship with her mother is very strained, and she wants to prove her wrong.
Knowing that Mahiru’s relationship with her mother is on bad terms as she doesn’t treat Kano as her daughter, Mahiru should have talked to Kano about it. However, doing so may be challenging, she asks Mei. I don’t think she is the right person as she will view Yukine highly with Kano, of course, as it doesn’t detail what happened.
What Mei knows about what led to the scandal is that Sunflower Dolls got into a big event that would have made them big after an idol group, but we don’t know what led to the punching incident. After Nonoko punched one of the members, she left the group, and Sunflower Dolls went on hiatus.
Kano, of course, calls Mahiru while she is working on her draft. Mahiru to tell her about the commission job for an event at the end of the year. Of course, working on it will interfere with the promise Miharu and Kano made. Kano felt that she didn’t want Mahiru to do the commission when Kano asked about what happened to Kano and her mother. Kano should have offered to tell more about what happened before Mahiru decided.
As expected, Mahiru visited Yukine to learn more. She has access to a binder of drafts that Mahiru has, even the most recent one. Yukine makes me feel suspicious. Does she have access to her daughter’s laptop, or has she been following for a while? She wants to incorporate Mahiru’s art and make Sunflower Dolls virtual idols. Yukine is enticing Mahiru.
When Mahiru asks why she mentions Kano’s name, Yukine doesn’t acknowledge her. Of course, how she treats her daughter gets worse from her. We know that Kano isn’t the only one with eyes on Mahiru. It’s Kano’s mother too.
With that, we got a glimpse of Kano’s past, which she didn’t tell Mahiru. When the teacher asked about her dreams in elementary school, Kano really looked up to her mother and wanted to be like her. Of course, the parents and students laughed at her as being weird. Those parents and students are judgmental, but Kano might have regretted this.
As we know, Kano has promising singing talents. Yukine used her daughter, besides changing her hair and having her use the stage name Tachibana Nonoka. Her members seem jealous of Kano. When Kano brings it up to her mother, Yukine says, just ignore them. After all, Yukine’s dream is to nurture an audience of 50,000. The funny thing is that Kano for JELEE wanted 100,000, which is double Yukine’s dream goal.
Of course, when Yukine announces a big opportunity for Sunflower Dolls, Kano seems suspicious and tries to do her investigation. During that time, she met her father and eventually came across that jellyfish mural that gave her inspiration for song lyrics. That is until she notices a phone put down and sees that Mero is the one who spreads negative rumors that lead to an idol group resigning.
As expected, she is furious, and it’s not like she is on good terms with Kano. Something seems fishy, but Yukine might have something to do with this. Mero deserved a punch in the face for being manipulative, but two wrongs don’t make a right. Her mother disowned her, and Sunflower Dolls went on hiatus. Kano went to that Jellyfish mural as she softly sang.
Sadly, when Mahiru gives her answer that she will take Yukine’s offer as she wants to challenge herself, Kano becomes upset. She felt betrayed as Kano wanted Mahiru to draw for JELEE only. While Kiui tries to calm Kano down, she is distraught, calling Mahiru a liar and saying that Mahiru is a jellyfish that can’t swim.
Understandably, Mahiru wants to improve her art and get more exposure, but perhaps doing it through Kano’s mother might not be a good idea. Mahiru failed to learn about what happened between Kano and her mother. If Kano had asked Mahiru to come over to her house or Mahiru had asked about her past, it wouldn’t end up like this. I hope it’s not too late for Mahiru and Kano to make up and realize they made a mistake. I don’t want to see this lovely pair pass the event horizon and break up forever.
Funny how this show has the best mother (Miiko) and the worst mother (Yukine) at the same time. Just a food of thought.

Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night Episode 9: Inky Debt – The Yuri Empire
Madame Yukine has some similarities to Chika’s mom and even Lady Prospera but she’s more like Ragyo Kiryuin. Poor Kano.
I bet she took notes from Chika when delivering that Yuri Justice Punch to confirmed bitch Mero.
Time for the “divorce arc” I suppose. It hurt to watch but it was admittedly well set up. Also the ED was devilishly clever. Whoever thought of it is both a magnificent bastard and deserves a raise.
Not too surprising as Yukine sees her daughter as a worker than her daughter. Not too surprising to see the comparison, especially given that Kano give that punch.
Hopefully there is some hope that it’s not entirely over for them, although sad though.
