Since I started this blog, I always did the twelve days of anime thing. For this year, given that it’s the year of yuri, it’s time to share my thoughts on some of the best yuri/lesbian pairings in my opinion from 2018 anime. None of them are in particular order.
Hazuki and Shizuka (Märchen Mädchen)
It’s easy to see why Hazuki and Shizuka is an obvious pairing. While Hazuki follows Shizuka in order to return the book she found, she eventually decides to become a Mädchen. Given that Shizuka saved Hazuki and acted like a mentor for her with Shizuka is her only best friend in Hazuki’s eyes, it’s easy to see why she has feelings for her. It shows when Hazuki came back to not only prevent Team Japan from defeat, but also bring home a win.
Hana and Tamate (Slow Start)
It’s not too surprising to see them get along with each other, probably a bit too much. There are several good shipping moments with Tamate trying to win over Shion. She also takes a bath with Hana in the 6th episode. Of course, there is also that time where Hana fantasizing herself having a date with Tamate with two teddy bears. This pairing can’t be more obvious. Even so, they make a nice pairing given how energetic Tamate is and how supportive she is towards Hana.
Yuzu and Harumi (Citrus)
In an alternative universe, Yuzu and Harumi would make a great pairing given how well they get along with each other. This is not too surprising since Harumi is Yuzu’s best friend and she always around to protect her. Harumi is the opposite of the stoic and strict Mei who gives Yuzu trouble. Not only that, Harumi has similar interests as Yuzu. Of course, since Yuzu and Mei is the official pairing, one can only dream.
Special Week and Silence Suzuka (Uma Musume)
It’s obvious how much Special Week seems to love Suzuka. Special being attracted towards Suzuka’s world class running abilities, her gorgeous appearance, and personality doesn’t come at a surprise. It comes as no surprise that Special wants to be on the same team as her. The funny thing is that Suzuka moved to Team Spica, which is the team that also tries to recuit Special Week.
Besides this, there is one point where Special couldn’t think anything besides Suzuka after Suzuka injured herself, which makes this a true pairing. Yes, her obsession over Suzuka actually went to a point where she lost sight of her goals with her straight losses. As they say, love can become a powerful drug.
Koyume and Tsubasa (Comic Girls)
Even in the anime and manga, Koyume’s crush on Tsubasa doesn’t come at a surprise. Despite Tsubasa being a girl, she has the qualities of Koyume’s ideal prince, especially her alter-ego. This is not too surprising since Koyume has trouble drawing males, which is a problem since she is a shoujo mangaka.
Despite this, it’s not too surprising to see Koyume and Tsubasa as a great pairing since they actually go on a date to an amusement park. Of course, there is that scene in the manga in the first volume with Tsubasa dressed in cute clothing and Koyume finding her cute.
Kaoruko and Fuura (Comic Girls)
Sure, Kaoruko and Ruki would make a good pairing, but of course, Kaoruko and Fuura is probably a match made in heaven. It’s obvious that Kaoruko is scared of Fuura since she is into horror, obsesses over Kaoruko, and her scary appearance creeps Kaoruko out. This does not help with Fuura being obsessed with Kaoruko by how she reacts. After Kaoruko finds out how cute and mature looking Fuura actually is, she changes her mind. Given that Kaoruko is Fuura’s only friend, I can see why this pairing work so well, although Ruki will probably become envious.
Yui and Tomoka (Kase-san)
While I won’t spoil much since I wrote a review on the original animation, it’s easy to see why this pairing work so well. While Yui is shy compared to the tomboyish and outgoing Tomoka, each moment they spent with each other is sweet. It shows especially when Yui gets excited over having her girlfriend in her bedroom. I have to admit that this moment is the most endearing moment in the original animation, although there are plenty of good and heartwarming moments.
Haruka and Kanata (Harukana Receive)
While Haruka and Kanata have completely different heights, I can see why they make a great pairing. Despite Haruka not being skilled at beach volleyball at first, she has a lot of faith in Kanata’s skills. Kanata of course trusts Haruka as well because of her height.
Since beach volleyball partners can be equated to a romantic relationship, it’s obvious where this is going. With that, there are good number of shipteasing moments between Haruka and Kanata. This consists of Kanata finding Haruka’s butt cute, Haruka giving Kanata a new swimsuit with the minsa pattern that equates to a love confession, and Haruka blowing into Kanata’s ears. Since Haruka and Kanata won the regional championships, their bonds are really strong.
Hanako and Uori (Ongaku Shoujo)
Some predicted that Uori has a crush on Hanako given much she blushed in the first episode. It’s not so surprising since Hanako is resourceful and cheerful despite being a bit naive. She regularly gives advice to her online as Dolly to Chorigana, who is Uori. Still, the moment where Hanako helps cheer Uori up while on a Farris wheel in the 11thepisode is nice. Not only that, she holds hands with her after she brings her back with some nice shipping moments afterwards.
Thanks to Uori, Hanako eventually becomes an idol. I think it wouldn’t be possible without Uori, especially when she hands her the idol outfit for her to wear.
Ellie and Hinata (Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san)
While Hinata is a tomboy, it’s nice to see Ellie help her out to become more feminine. It shows with Ellie’s outfit choice for Hinata as they pick out outfits with each other. Of course, there are other nice moments such as Ellie taking Hinata home on Halloween, and of course Ellie taking Hinata to the haunted house during cultural festival. Not only that, it seems that Ellie liked how Hinata looked in a maid’s outfit. Still, I think they are a cute pairing like the Sophie and Akari counterpart.
Yuu and Touko (Yagate Kimi ni Naru)
This is quite obvious since Touko has an interest in Yuu for some reason even though Yuu doesn’t love her back, yet. Still, I think they are a cute pairing, especially with all the intimate moments. Like Tomoka from Kase-san, Touko becomes flustered when she studies with Yuu in Yuu’s bedroom. Of course, there are the moments where Touko kisses Yuu and have Yuu call her by her first name. Those moments are priceless.
Tsubame and Midori (Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru)
Sure, Misha and Mimika would make a better pairing than the obvious and canon, Tsubame and Misha. If there is an alternate reality, Tsubame and Midori would make a better pairing. After all, Misha said that Tsubame should marry Midori. Not too surprising since both of them are muscle beauties. Given that Midori seems to like Tsubame a lot given her strength, fashion sense and cooking abilities, they are meant to be together. Sadly, reality is not like that, so it will never happen.
I hope you enjoyed my best yuri pairings of 2018. What are your favorite yuri pairings? Feel free to share them in the comments. Also, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Wonderful list with some surprise picks like KAOS X Fuura. I agree with all your other fav 2018 couples/ships. I patiently await the two final episodes of Maerchen Maedchen so we can see the conclusion to Hazuki and Shizuka’s love story.
I am actually waiting for the blu-ray subtitled versions to come out so I can watch it in the full glory. I saw how bad the last three episodes were animated.
Exactly what I was referring to, dem Blu-Rays.
Don’t think Tsubame X Misha in Uzamaid is a canon pairing when Misha rejects Tsubame (a right good thing too). More the central, unrequited pairing.
It’s quite true, but we won’t know for sure until the actual series end if it becomes cannon or not.
