I’m quite amazed that there is actually a Phantom that can turn people into cat girls and boys.
Believe it or not, given the preview for this episode, I already knew that this one was going to be hilarious. It seems that there is a mansion that was abandoned because it was overrun with stray cats. You would think crazy cat lady, but it seems that there are three students that attended the school that happen to like cats and want to keep the strays company.
It seems that the Phantom in this episode manifested itself to protect the precious memories, which can explain why people are slowly behaving like cats and that Rudolph, Arina’s cat suddenly disappear without a trace. This Phantom is basically based off Schrödinger’s cat, which is not actually a cat, but rather a thought experiment or a paradox critiquing someone’s interpretation to quantum mechanics to everyday objects. The experiment calls for a cat, flask of poison and a radioactive source placed in a sealed box. It is said that the cat can be simultaneously alive and dead when the box is not open. After one sees the cat from the box, it can only be alive or dead, not both.
So, what does this paradox have to do with this episode anyway? It’s simple. Sure, it got pretty trippy when the girls and Haruhiko faced off the Phantom, which is the mansion itself and a big cat. Apparently, Kurumi’s feelings determined that Rudolph was still alive, thus the Phantom understood her feelings and decided to give it back. Not to mention, Reina coaxing the Phantom and insuring that it’s not alone allows them to resolve its feelings so that it can disappear in peace. In short, it just shows the paradox as explained by Haruhiko as there can only be one outcome.
Aside from that, I have to admit that this episode was hilarious and very enjoyable. It’s funny to see the girls act like cats by taking long naps, eating fish, obsessing over cat food and attempting to go after a toy cattail. Not to mention, the girls just look too cute with cat ears and tails, especially Reina and Kurumi. Still, Mai and Koito look adorable too.
