As it seems, this might be the mystery that Sakurako wants to solve which will reveal something about those butterflies along with her younger brother’s death.
For a while, the show has foreshadowed something with butterflies. Remember the mysterious guy in the fifth episode that has something resembling butterflies in his car? While it’s a speculation, he might be the guy who is behind two girls’ disappearance with one currently missing. The butterfly swarm on a dead carcass pretty much foreshadows what to come in the upcoming case that Sakurako decides to solve.
In this episode, Sakurako, Shoutaro and Itsuki decides to find some bones before winter arrives. After they found a swarm of rare butterflies over a corpse, Itsuki receives a call that Hitoe is reported missing. When he revealed that Futaba disappeared two years ago, he feels regretful for not doing something about it as Hitoe and Manami drifted apart. It’s easy to sympathize with him for the fact that he could have prevented someone from committing suicide. As a result, he grew plants in order to repent himself, which makes his obsession over plants understandable as they won’t leave unless you neglect them.
From this mystery, it seems that the three girls might have a secret relationship with a painter, which causes Hitoe to not get along with Minami after Futaba disappeared. Aside from looking in Hitoe’s room, which is useless given that she didn’t leave much clues behind except for an empty box containing a battery for a phone, they look at Minami’s room. While the two girls had the same stuff animal, Sakurako find a painting with Minami as the model in a similar style as the one in the Fujioka house. This makes me wonder if that painter is behind the girls’ disappearances.
While they managed to find Minami, it’s clear that she came from a dysfunctional family since she is never at home when her dad is around. Also, she is anemic after giving an outburst. Still, she reveals some information behind the so-called painter named Hanabusa who appears when butterflies are in season. Still, it’s nice for Sakurako to have her come over to have dinner and stay over. Perhaps she will reveal more information about this mysterious painter next time so that they can find and save Hitoe in time. Perhaps, we will learn more about that guy and the meaning behind those butterflies that might relate to the death of Sakurako’s little brother.
