As Rin takes Haruka to Australia, will Haruka finally find a dream for himself?
From the look of the twelfth episode, it seems that Rin wanted to show Haruka around Australia in order to share some of his experiences he had studying abroad. While he faced some difficulties, his home stay parents were very supportive and they were happy to see Haruka for the first time. Even so, I’m glad that Haruka has found a reason to continue swimming. It seems that he wants to swim internationally just like Rin. With that, I think it was a good call for Rin to show him around Australia.
As for the last episode, while it got emotional when Nagisa and Rin realized that Makoto and Haruka would be graduating, at least they calmed down and shared some memories they had together. In the end, they managed to win the championship for the relay race, which is a nice way to end the series off. I admit that the prologue showing how the cast is doing a year later was a nice touch.
Final Impressions
Surprisingly, I find the second season of Free more entertaining than the prequel for the fact that Rin was not an angsty shark boy. While Sousuke kind of mirrored the attitude Rin used to have, at least he admitted during regionals that he overworked himself. Aside from that, I felt that Kyoto Animation done a better job overall giving every character (except for Gou sadly) the spotlight without making the drama feel too angsty.
Will there be another season? Who knows considering how popular it is? :p
