Will Yuuta do the unthinkable and take his relationship with Rikka to the next important milestone? Hint: He doesn’t.
As expected, the finale was rather disappointing for the fact that the writers automatically made Satone lose yet Rikka still haven’t made any significant progress even after reawakening the Dark Flame Dragon. It’s such a shame since Yuuta was so close to actually kissing her, except to be interrupted in the end by a phone call. This scene sort of reminds me of all the scenes in Nogizaka Haruka where Yuuto almost kisses Haruka, but ends up getting interrupted each time. Still, it’s kind of expected given how much the relationship between Yuuta and Rikka progressed, which is not that much. Besides Shinka, Sanae, Kumin and Satone, this finale was disappointing.
Final Thoughts
While I believe that Chuunibyou was Kyoto Animation’s strongest show with their trend of focusing on their own IPs, the second season gave me mixed feelings. It’s such a shame since I really enjoy the fact that the second season is light-hearted and didn’t focus too much on heavy drama. Ironically, I ended up enjoying the supporting characters (Shinka, Sanae, Satone, Kumin) rather than the main couple of the show because they are less annoying.
I understand that it’s difficult for Rikka to progress with the relationship since she is more concentrated on her Chuunibyou rather than on love. At the same time, it feels that they hardly progressed besides going on a small date and Rikka giving Yuuta a small kiss on the cheek. There is still no kiss from the two despite how much encouragement they got. To me, it would have been more interesting if Satone was considered a true rival to Rikka, but they have up on her so quickly for the sake of keeping the status quo before they even gave her a chance. It’s such a shame.
Aside from the disappointment romance wise, I still enjoy Chuunibyou Ren quite a lot even though it’s not as good compared to the prequel. I do hope that if there is ever a third season that the two will finally get to true relationship status because if they don’t, Kyoto Animation will have a lot of explaining to do.
