As the festivities begin, Takayanagi is clearly after Izumiko’s powers, which results in an unexpected surprise.
Since the beginning, Takayanagi is just bad news because he wanted to gain control of Izumiko’s power. Ironically, she almost fell into his trap and joined their side before she let out her rage. With the balloon flying suspiciously and ghosts unleashed, he is obviously up to no good. Sadly, he didn’t foresee the wrath that Izumiko will unleash after Miyuki calls him. Believe it or not, I liked the end result. He turns into a cute white dog in the finale! That serves him right! Thankfully he redeems himself by helping Miyuki and apologizing to Izumiko. Then again, with Takayanagi turning into a dog, it just reinforces a theory that Wamiya is actually the same person, but from a different time period.
On the other hand, remember the plan where Mayura wanted to have Miyuki become her fake boyfriend to trick Takayanagi? This plan plays an important part in the last episode since it hurts the person they love. Moreover, Izumiko already stated that she doesn’t like Miyuki talking about other women. I think Matsumi falling in love with Izumiko and trying to keep her in the spirit world will not only hurt Miyuki, but hurt Mayura as well. Of course, her ultimate wish doesn’t help either since she wants to merge her heart with Manatsu. In a way, it’s just as bad compared to Izumiko hiding herself from the real world. This may be a reason Manatsu doesn’t want her to become the top student because there might be another way to prevent his unfortunate fate without sacrifice.
In the end, I’m glad that Izumiko finally resolved her worries thanks to Miyuki coming to the rescue. It’s true that he has feelings for her and wants to protect her regardless she is the Himegami or not. However, this is only possible when Izumiko accepts that she was the Himegami all along and shouldn’t worry as she survived on earth up to this point. Therefore, I think it’s possible to change fate so that humanity doesn’t get wiped out. However, having special powers doesn’t mean that you can’t live life as a normal girl. She managed to use a cell phone without any problems now, so I think she can believe in herself and tame her abilities so that it doesn’t go out of control. After all, she has Miyuki and her friends.
Final Thoughts
As a whole, Red Data Girl is a very intriguing show mostly because Izumiko is a mysterious person who doesn’t know her true potential. It’s true that we don’t know much about the Himegami or why strange stuff happens. I feel that most of the show focuses on the challenges she faces in accepting that Himegami is a part of her while Miyuki starts to like her and wants to protect her from danger. However, I feel that a good amount of people has mixed feelings about this show and dropped it in the beginning episodes for the fact that the show has a strong Japanese culture influence. Perhaps a Japanese audience and people who read the light novel would understand the story better. Despite its flaws, the beautiful animation, intriguing story and music made this show a treat to watch.
