An unfortunate turn of events unfolds as Wakana experiences some melancholy regarding her mother.
From the first episode, Wakana is different compared to the other members of the group because of her depression. When she turned down strawberry cake that Konatsu promised her to get, I knew that something was fishy. Nobody in his or her right mind would refuse cake, but she did. Of course, it’s connected to the sad memories about losing her mother, which caused her to become more isolated from society.
If you recall in the first two episodes, it’s clear that the Vice Principal, Naoko was close with Wakana’s mother. Probably she was reluctant to allow the girls to sing that song because it would have reminded her the sad memories, especially for Wakana. Still, I’m only scratching the surface since the problem is a lot deeper than expected.
What I liked about this episode in particular is how it showed Wakana’s relationship with her mother. Compared to the flash back as a child, she used to get along with her mother. As she grew older, their relationship fell apart. She became really harsh towards her mother’s cheerful personality and passion for music because she wanted to pass an entrance exam. However, she paid the price as her mother dies from a mysterious illness and suddenly feels remorseful for acting so harsh towards her. It’s kind of tragic since some doesn’t realize how much affection the parents gave while raising their child before it’s too late. Life is short and it’s simply not worth staying angry forever.
On the other hand, I wonder how Wakana will reconcile her feelings towards her mother. Getting rid of the piano and her belongings (that she labeled worthless) obviously won’t make her feel any better. Even her father doesn’t understand why she wants to get rid of these things either. From my speculation, I think she might resolve it on her own or have friends help out since being isolated like that is not a healthy way to live. Either way, I hope her well so she can go back to playing music.
We need a bit of Konatsu ENERGY to power up Wakana and make her start anew with music. She’s really too sad at the moment…:(
Yeah, but it seems that might not be enough to help cheer her up. She kind of created the issue on herself by treating her mother harshly without realizing about the terminal illness. Still, I think it’s something that she must get over herself.
