It has been a very long time since I have written about Nichijou since I decided not blog the series and watch it only for enjoyment. Since I last written about it in April, I felt that it’s necessary to share my thoughts briefly on the second half while focusing on a few favorite moments I watched so far. (Image Source)
Nichijou felt like a different slice of life anime compared to previous Kyoto Animation works such as K-ON and Lucky Star. The big difference between this and the former is that there isn’t much character development, but instead focuses primarily on snapshots of different character driven comedy. Even though I find that some of these jokes a mixed bag or plain weird, there are many that caused me to laugh really hard through the countless misfortunes from Yuuko and crazy shenanigans from Nano, Sakamoto and the Hakase. I feel that Nanko, Sakamoto and the Hakase gave the funniest moments out of the whole cast since the Hakase always has some crazy things up her sleeve with the addition of Nano’s cuteness.
With the second half of the series, the jokes got better mostly due in part of Nano getting more screen time as she is now attending school.
Favorite Moments thus far
Episode 11
Poor Yuuko, she was sick with a cold and finally got cured at the worst possible moment. Now she has an exam to take tomorrow, which she can’t fail. As you already know, pulling all-nighters is never the best way to study for a test as we doze off and can’t retain all the facts efficiently. Therefore, she attempts to catch a cold through many methods such as soaking in ice-cold water and stuff, but hilariously fails.
Also in this episode is another moment with Sakamoto and the Hakase. Basically, the Hakase spreads a big tube of super glue as a prank, which he gets stuck in it. Then she gets divine punishment when she got trapped in to. Later, Nano finds out about the glue, but unknowingly gets stuck in it too and hilarity ensues. For me, this was the funniest moment at the institute I have seen for now.
Episode 14 – 16
Nano finally gets a chance to attend school, but it’s not the welcoming she wanted since she didn’t look normal. While Mio thinks she is not a robot, Mai, Yuuko and eventually Nakamura tries to do funny things to learn the truth such as adding sleep inducers in coffee, giving a bottle of oil and use of a zapper. From this, I kind of felt sympathetic towards Nano since she only wants to be a normal girl, but nobody really cares.
Lastly, I cannot forget Mio attacking people when they look at her yaoi manga drawings… At one point, she attacked a goat, which was ridiculous. Hopefully this attack doesn’t anger PeTA.
I really love this series! After a long day of Loli-Tsundere’s and fighting anime Nichijou is the best wind down series! It’s so random that it makes it even more fun, sure a storyline would have been nice for the first half but second half Nano in school = Wonderful!
Hakase meeting Yuuko damn that was the best! Of course most hate Hakase but I don’t mind her as much, of course Yuuko is my all time fav! She fails so much but always in a comical way <3
Goat fighter Mio! So fun xD
Ahh yes. While I seem to enjoy Nichijou a bit more than Hidan no Aria, I still felt that few of the jokes are pretty meh… But yeah, Yuuko kind of makes the day since she has really bad luck, especially her visit to Nano’s house as she is going anxious.
While I don’t have any hate for Hakase, most of the dislike may come from the treatment of Nano and her reluctance to make her a normal girl. Then again, her antics and cuteness makes it up so…
Ahh yes I always grin when I see Yuuko messing up weekly! It always amuses me so much, I think Comedy anime is my most recent addiction lately, sure I love a good drama but damn comedy is fun and relaxing 😉
Right I can see that, Hakase does refuse to help Nano out in that department T___T Ah well I think that’s always going to be a huge running joke between them.
Bandai grabbed this! So time to wait on dvds
Yeah, I enjoy alot of the comedy anime as long it has a lot of girls. It’s a great way to brighten the day from any stress, which is one of the reasons I don’t really blog about Nichijou. Unlike K-On, there isn’t really much you can talk about for me and writing about each joke isn’t the same compared to watching it in whole.. This is kind of true with pure slice of life that focus primarily on snapshots of comedy like Lucky Star.
As for the licensed DVDs, I’m more interested if they have an English dub, how they will pull all these jokes off. We will find out in due time.
