With Victorica and Kazuya trying to solve the fortuneteller murder, they are led to a mysterious boat. The Queen Barry is where the maid may have escaped, which is notorious for murders and traps for the “hares.”
The mystery in this episode is slightly better than the last episode. Since we are introduced to the hares that are mulled in the last episode, they are significant with the Queen Barry and the situation where the children on the boat murdered others 10 years ago. Fortunately, there were some survivors that may be on the boat. Maurice on the other hand knows too much about the boat that he has something up his sleeves.
In the flashback, Maurice retells the events that happened to the children when they were chosen by the adults to spend a night on the Queen Barry. The cruise was obviously a trap with the intention to murder all the children (or hares) of different nationalities. This situation feels similar to the rabbits in the first episode with the hunting dog. However, they are influenced to murder each other with the lack of trust with each other.
Lastly, it may be too obvious that Maurice is behind this mystery. There was a mention that they saw another person that wasn’t in the dining room. Also, the disappearance of the staff has signal something strange with the cruise. Later, there are traps around the ship, which make it seem that the Queen Barry may be processed. These traps include, but not limited to darts being thrown when triggered, getting on the lifeboat and the out of control elevator that no one went on. It made me wonder about Maurice’s insanity or that he planned the murder with all the passengers on the ship. In no doubt he is from the hidden weapons in every possible place he uses to carry out his plan.
Overall, I liked this episode of Gosick a bit more than the last episode since the mystery was more interesting. As always, Victorica continues to look really cute with the addition of her laugh. Her fake laugh caused me to laugh so hard that it got stuck in my head. Kazuya in this episode was braver when he protected her from the traps and Maurice. I applaud him for that despite his weakness shown in a flashback when he was knocked out by the poisoned food. Nevertheless, the next episode seems to be the end of the cruise murder case and hopefully it will wrap up cleanly.
It’s nice to know that the episodes get a bit better. After watching the first one I was reluctant to watch any more but I may just give it another go.
I did like the episode better in terms of the mystery, but I’m hoping there’s more to Kazuya in the future. Sure, he’s brave and all, but at this point he just still seems a bit ‘meh’ to me. Nothing really setting him apart from the crowd of anime men.
Ahh, yes. I think the meh-ness has to do with the high expectations since Bones is making this show and does not stack up with the other shows like FMA: Brotherhood that aired few years ago or something. Still, it’s an okay watch, but not on top of my list.
Agreed. This episode was far better than the first. I’m looking forward to how the producers will bring in new mysteries and the such.
Considering I have watched episode three, the conclusion for the Queen Barry case was pretty good. The next few episodes will be slice of life to introduce the viewers to the other characters in the academy that they forgot in the two episodes after the first. Probably after that, they will find another mystery to work on.
