Tantei Opera Milky Holmes is probably one of the most unexpected gems in the Fall 2010 season. While the first episode gave me a mediocre impression, it only got better with every episode. On top of that, you have these wacky heroes that do really funny cute things. In addition, you got the absolutely hilarious villains, especially Twenty who can’t keep off his shirt. Besides from that, I want to share my thoughts about Milky Holmes as a complete season. (Image Source)
It makes me wonder, what is Milky Holmes all about? It’s about four girls attending a detective school. They suddenly their powers called Toys after the Phantom Thieves escaped after they cornered them. As a result, they are put on academic probation until they regain their Toys. The rest is predictable with Milky Holmes, the Thieves, G4 and other characters getting into ridiculous situations like the Prince and the Pauper parody, getting attacked by bears and being sucked into a random parody of Momotaro in order to nurse Henriette to health. Most of the situations are actually hilarious since the characters from the show support it.
The characters in Tantei Opera Milky Holmes look absolutely cute. This is most apparent with all the Milky Holmes’s girls (Cordelia, Hercule, Nero and Sherlock), the G4 (Kokoro especially), Aresene (in disguise) and other guest characters that are shown for one episode. Out of the whole cast, Kokoro-chan and Cordelia are my favorites since I like their personalities and quirkiness.
The character’s appearance in certain situations makes some really funny moments. Most notably in the Prince and the Pauper parody, Princess Claris proved this when she swaps places with Sherlock and gets so amazed of the normal life Milky Holmes have. In addition, Cordelia contributes to these when she is forced to strip naked so Hercule and the other three G4 girls can get out of the pit. Sadly, I have some minor complaints since the thieves are being way too harsh on the girls when they are so young! Then again, the harshness kind of adds to the comedy that the girls face.
On the other hand, you have some characters that give you the laughs when take sight of them. Twenty is probably the person that comes in mind from his odd personality. He has the tendency to strip his shirt or all the clothes off so the young girls can see his BEAUTIFUL body. If I was one of those girls, I would probably be scared for life. Besides stripping, he is also obsessed with himself and has a liking for Aresené’s breasts… so much that he even crossdressed as her in a suit that conceals his appearance. Because of odd behavior Twenty shown, I was convinced that he is one of the funniest villains besides Aresené from the whole show.
The animation and music was pretty decent even though the animation was average. While the animation is slightly appealing than Bakuman, the backgrounds was lacking a bit. This is more apparent in the Momotaro parodies where the background almost looked like it was from Kaichou wa Maid-sama! Otherwise, the character appearances looked cute, but nothing to special. As for the music, I don’t really have an opinion since I haven’t listened to the OST, but at least the OP/ED sounded decent. The opening song was very addicting and catchy after listening to it many times.
Overall, I liked Tantei Opera Milky Holmes since it was ridiculously enjoyable. While some of the actions taken by the characters caused my intelligence to go down ever so slightly, I actually enjoyed it. The epic fight in space and the events that happened afterwards in the last episode pretty much wrapped up my impressions about the show as a whole. Would I recommend it? If you don’t mind the excess moe, want to see something over the top and funny and resembles Galaxy Angels, go for it and you won’t regret it!
Overall Rating
9.0/10, A-, Very Good
Gonna try and finish this tonight, so I’m not reading because of spoilers, but I have one thing to say…Your nipples are hard.
Completely forgot about that since Twenty has a big obsession of his long nipples…
Anyways, enjoy the last two eps!
Well written review dood. I also found an undeniable charm while watching Milky Holmes and look forward to the upcoming special, or was it 2nd season? Whatever it is, I’ll definitely watch it.
Good stuff.
