In our first moment of Anime in 2010, we are taking a look at Dolphins and Sora no Woto…
So, why the obsession over dolphins? Human beings define dolphins as a friendly mammal that have intelligence that rivals humans… but are they? Kanata doesn’t think so.
Sora no Woto is the epitome of human kind’s destruction, especially when a big war that happened. As a result, most of the animals in the ocean became extinct including the dolphins. Just remember that if you keep spilling oil, this will be the end result.
Since Kanata doesn’t understand much about the world around her, she isn’t so familiar to these friendly creatures called dolphins. This leaves us to the most hilarious line of the whole show regarding dolphins, which says this:
I would tell them that dolphins are very SCARY animals that will even eat humans!
That quote was pretty ironic since dolphins do not eat humans in real life. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be so friendly towards humans. Instead of humans, a dolphin eats various types of fishes and squids. Be very afraid of them Ika Musume! Unfortunately, there are certain species that could be aggressive to humans. While Orcas or killer whales share the friendly behavior of the dolphins, they can harm a human if irritated. This was evident in the SeaWorld incident when an Orca killed a trainer. Besides the rare instances, dolphins are harmless towards humans.
As for the dolphin’s intelligence, they truly rival the intelligence of humans. This is proven in a recent study conducted by a scientist that involves dolphins looking at themselves in the mirror. Eventually, the dolphin figures out that they are looking at themselves. Since the dolphins recognize their own selves in the mirror, they would start checking themselves out, swim upside down and/or make funny faces. The mirror even works on younger dolphins, which pretty much backs up the claims that dolphins are truly intelligent just as humans.
So, are dolphins really the scary human eating mammals that Kanata believed? Not really… They are really friendly and intelligent, unless you are a squid girl of course!
Notes: I have done it a bit too early due to finals… Future posts will not be published early, but written ahead of time and scheduled.
