“To a place in this city where wishes come true”
Here is the finale all the people have been waiting for! Here it is!
Synopsis
The whole entire world is white and the Garbage Doll and the girl are stuck on their journey out of the world. Meanwhile, Tomoya stood still and then Nagisa started to go down the hill.
Back into the sad world, the girl starts talking to the doll and she can understand him. The girl tells the doll that she is part of the world and she is needed to protect the lights. Then she explains that the lights are happiness from people in the other world that he helped. After collecting every light, they will come together to become a strong force. Then the girl starts to sing a very familar song to the doll and as the Illusionary World started to disappear, the girl says goodbye to her daddy.
Back in the real world, Tomoya finally realizes and yells Nagisa’s name and then he ran to her and hugs her. Then, Nagisa tells him that she was worried that he was thinking about not meeting her and that she is glad to meet him again. Afterwards, Tomoya kisses Nagisa’s hand and hugs her.
Back to the current time, Nagisa successfully gave birth without any tragic event happening. With that, Tomoya bathes Ushio and cleans her with Yagi instructing him while Nagisa watches them. After they were done with that and shown her the baby, she notices the lights outside the window and afterwards they started singing.
Within the 5 years, they started to raise Ushio and lastly visited Tomoya’s Gandmother and let Ushio play in the sunflower fields and they happily live ever after…
Extra Episode: What happened a year before they met.
Reaction
Wow… Episode 22 is a great ending and done without taping random miracles into one episode like Kanon’s (2006 Remake) ending. As that said, this ending is a beautiful ending at the very least after what Tomoya have gone though. This doesn’t mean that this ending makes the last 5 episodes meaningless because they are important in Tomoya’s development as being a father and taking responsibility of raising Ushio with love without Nagisa in the last 5 episodes. With that, it made his miracle come true after he experiences hardship, which the girl thanks the Doll (Tomoya) near the ending of the illusionary world.
I thought the ending was almost perfect, but a little flawed… We know that making a non-linear Visual Novel into a linear story Anime is pretty tough stuff, but at the end, Kyoto Animation did a great job on it. That said, this episode gets a 9.7/10.
Series Review
Overall, Kyoto Animation and Key done a great job on Clannad ~After Story~. Sure, it was a emotional roller-coaster ride, but it ended up become a very beautiful and enjoyable story. As that said, Clannad ~After Story~ now takes number one place (sorry Kanon fans… Kanon will always be first in my heart :p) which Kanon (2006 remake) took. If you like Slice of Life, some comedy, drama, and romance series, I strongly suggest checking out these series after watching the first season. You won’t regret it.
