Grading Criteria

Anime is scored on the following:

Story/Plot

The story is the main component of any Anime out there. Lousy or inconsistent plot can chop the score a bit. The story has to be interesting or enjoyable. If not, it will score poorly.

Animation

Animation is another important component below story since it’s the medium on how the studio presents the story. Poor animation tends to take a hit with scoring. However, if the story turns out to be strong, I will be lenient on Animation.

Characters

A story won’t exist there are no characters… so characters go hand to hand with story. If the characters are interesting or pleasing to watch, it’s going to help boost the overall quality/enjoyment of the story. Flat and bland characters tend to make the story stale, thus reducing the score.

Music

Music is the final component of the show that helps with the story presentation. If the Opening and/or Ending theme turns out bad, it won’t look good for the whole show. If it has good music, it will definitely help with the show. Music is done last in the review since it’s the least important.

Other Things

Excessive and unnecessary fanservice can reduce the rating of the show since it adds absolutely no value to the show… I don’t need to watch pantyshots every 5 seconds or boob groping… and I tend to avoid those shows that have excessive fanservice with certain exceptions (like Nogizaka Haruka).

Scoring Scale

Scores are done on a 1-10 scale with decimals.

> = 9.4 – Masterpiece (A to A+)

8.45-9.39 – Very Good (B to A)

7.45-8.44 – Good (C to B)

6.45-7.44 – Average (D – C)

6-6.44 – Below Average (D- – D)

< = 5.99 – Failure (F)

Note: Decimal scores are rounded down if it’s less than or equal to #.54 and rounded up if the score is greater than or equal to #.56. # represents the corresponding grade.
